The song is about the suicidal death of florence's grandmother who killed herself after the death of her grandfather. The term dog days or dog star is a reference to the slow, stagnant,uneventful and fairly calm days during mid summer months when nothing extravagant occurs because of extreme heat. Happiness hit her like a train ... refers to the substance/alcohol abuse incurred by her grandmother after the death of her husband and unwillingness to accept it. The chorus is taken from the perspective of Florence herself who has come to realization that life will never be the same for her as she has witnessed the demise/suicide of her own grandmother. Happiness hit her like a bullet... is reference to the literal act of her grandmother killing herself and how Florence believed that her grandmother should have known better than to kill herself. |
