MGMT – The Handshake Lyrics 15 years ago
Okay, am I the only one who gets a terribly empty feeling when I listen to MGMT? I don't know if they do it on purpose or what, but their songs put on a sort of facade of happiness but their are definite dark undertones in EVERY one of heir songs (yes I KNOW all songs are meant to be happy, but even their supposedly happy songs give me the willies.) I love their music, but I can't stand to listen to it anymore because it makes me feel WEIRD. When I am listening and singing the words, what am I really doing? Do the words really mean anything, or were they strung together randomly to give listeners a false sense of depth and meaning? I'm not trying to bash them, or "troll", because I think they are an incredible band with talent that is unmatched by most 21st century bands/solo artists.

When I listen to their music, it is like I am an infant, trying to understand the words of the adults that surround me. I cannot understand what they are saying, but I know the feeling their words are giving me. Even so, I am drawn to their music like a moth to the moon... but I will never understand why. I keep going back for another listen, searching desperately for any feeling other than emptiness... but I always wind up disappointed.

Am I the ONLY one who feels this way? Have I gone mental? O__O

Alanis Morissette – Baba Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is hardly ideal for an atheist. It doesn't criticize religion in general, but it does criticize the perversion of religious cults. Alanis is a spiritual person, so she wouldn't sarcastically insult any religion or religious person. Fathers abandoning their families in order to achieve nirvana, blindly worshiping and forking over money. This song pays no tribute to Christianity or any other religion besides Hinduism and Buddhism. Simple: money cannot buy you salvation. You should seek after God. No man on Earth is comparable to God. Giving into the fear of man gets you nowhere.

Miley Cyrus – Can't Be Tamed Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think it's about people hating Miley as a person, it's about people hating her choices and her actions. This song isn't about telling Disney off, because after all, Disney was the wind beneath her wings. Without Disney, what would've Miley gotten famous for? Her "amazing" acting? Her "stunning" good looks? Her "beautiful" voice? Without Disney, she would have just been an average, non-slutty girl.

My interpretation of this song is that Miley just wants people to accept her slutty persona. In this song, she admits many things:

1. She likes to get her way, 24 hours a day
2. She has self confidence, and loves for guys to gawk at her body
3. In saying "I'm wrong like that..." she admits that her thought process is perverted and "wrong"
4. If anyone tries to stop her, she might explode. She wants to be a part of something big, where maybe people might look up to her and admire her, instead of browbeating her. Maybe that is why she is getting involved with this "save the world, spread the love" tree-hugging garbage. This plan, sadly, may backfire on her.
5. She has convinced herself that people are trying to "change" her. I hear this WAY too often among teenage girls. They go on and on saying "I'm not going to change for ANYONE!!!" but what Miley doesn't realize is that she is perverting herself to please herself and to please men. She wants the media and the general public to accept her, so she is trying to be the "bad girl".... she is failing miserably.

There are a lot of contradictions in this song. She gets her way all day, but she's not a brat? She goes through guys like water, yet she is worried about what they are trying to do to her?

Overall, this song has a nice tune. It could have been a real booster shot to her singing career if she had just modified the lyrics and made them meaningful and inspiring. This is just another shallow, generic song, sadly. I wish the best to Miley. Hopefully she has a revelation soon.
