I think this song is about a former lover who joined the army(perhaps against his wishes???) and had her hair cut short. the song itself has a lot of terms that can be Interpreted in a military way: staked out as in lying in wait to strike, tumbling down hills faces dirty with war paint is pretty self explanatory when put in the proposed context of the military, and the line that says, “Having stolen parts of buildings” could refer to the occupation of buildings that would make the soldiers bandits in the eyes of the warring nation. |
