All of your interpretations are good, but I believe godofbow's is the best one. (S)he says that the song is about Tarja leaving Nightwish and being replaced by Anette. Even though I wish this weren't the meaning of the song, I believe this is what the song is saying. Here is my interpretation line to line: Also be aware that "him", "he", and "his" in the song's lyrics I believe refers to Nightwish without Tarja, calling Nightwish a person with emotions. "Baptized with a perfect name" This is purely a flattery line, meant to say that Nightwish is a great, almost perfect, band. "The doubting one by heart" The members of Nightwish, in a way, doubt sending Tarja away. "Alone without himself" Tarja was a major part of Nightwish. Without her, it's almost as if Nightwish isn't Nightwish anymore, without a singer. "War between him and the day" 'Day' here symbolizes time. Time is against the band at this point, because they don't have a singer. They are running out of time. "Needs someone to blame" Even though it is the band's fault for letting Tarja go, they need someone else to blame for it. Perhaps Tarja? Or maybe they aren't blaming anybody, they're just stating that they wanted someone to blame. "In the end, little he can do alone" A band without a singer is like a cat without it's claws (most of the time). It leaves them defenseless, and they cannot accomplish much. This is the point when Nightwish realizes that they NEED to start finding a new singer. "You believe but what you see You recieve but what you give" These two lines may mean something, or they may not. The lines may have been put there simply because they are good life lessons to follow. But it may in fact have something to do with Nightwish. Maybe these lines are speaking to the fans of Nightwish. The first line says that you only believe what you see. But instead of it being literal sight, it may mean your perception of things. With Anette as the new singer of Nightwish, she was critisized from the very beginning. She was immediately compared to Tarja, and this first line is asking us to see things from a different perspective. Instead of critisizing Anette by comparing her to Tarja, try to see her almost not as compared to Tarja. The second line states that you recieve only what you give. It's talking to those who just don't like Anette only because, in your opinion, she isn't as good as Tarja. If you don't give Anette a chance, you won't recieve any insight back. You won't see Anette for her good points, only for her bad points. "Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak" Just like godofbows said, this chorus talks about two different people, Tarja and Anette. The first two lines speaks about Tarja. She is Never-Fading because Nightwish will never forget her, no matter what happens. The rain in your heart and tears of snow-white sorrow line means that Nightwish is sorrowful for Tarja's departure from the band. But they realize that they must move on. The next two lines speak about Anette. An amaranth is an imaginary, undying flower used to symbolize immortality or eternal life. It means that hopefully, with Anette as the new singer, Nightwish can continue to live on eternally to play wonderful music for their fans. The land of daybreak I believe symbolizes a new beginning, because daybreak is the start of a new day. It means that Anette is the start of a new beginning for Nightwish. The chorus as a whole says that both singers should be praised, and you shouldn't favor one over the other. "Apart from the wandering pack" This speaks about a specific group of Nightwish fans, which I will explain shortly. "In this brief flight of time, we reach for the ones who ever dare" This talks about the fact that Anette hasn't been in the band for very long, so it is a brief flight of time. I also believe, because it is Anette who is singing the song, that "we" refers to Nightwish with Anette as the lead singer. This new Nightwish is searching for a group of fans, the same one in the line about the wandering pack. They are searching for the fans who will accept Anette as the new singer of Nightwish, and not critisize her for being after Tarja. This is not to say we should forget about Tarja, heavens no! Only that we should try not to compare the two as much. "Reaching, searching, for something untouched Hearing voices of the Never-Fading calling" Honestly, I don't know how these two lines would fit into my interpretation of the song. That's one of the major flaws in what I think this song means. I have a couple guesses, but none are very good. So, that is my interpretation of the song. I would appreciate any comments on my line by line interpretations. Nightwish forever!!! :) |
