I think most of the themes people have mentioned make sense in different ways. Except for the idea of BABY RAPE? Now, I know DEP's lyrics are intense, morbid, and even disturbing to some ;) but they're not by any means into molesting kids, I mean seriously. Anyway, I think the song's basically about some detached, risky, kinky (like S&M shit!) sex fantasy between two people who've probably been drinking and/or doing drugs. I also believe that there's something else going on too; like it's either a one-night-stand, or an affair... something you should know better to do: "First off, let me say you look so tired; rest your head, and shut your eyes. Empty ambition blankets the sky; I'm thinking 'bout another world tonight" ... the woman in the song is probably wasted, so he's “comforting” her. The “empty ambition” would be his heartless lust towards this woman & he's thinking of the things he wants to do to her. "So drop the gown, the game's over. Just push your face into the fight; and it breaks my heart, like dancing up all night. Ride so high, we both start thinking bout another world tonight; and it feels so wrong, like nothing we've ever felt before" ... he just wants her to get naked & be down for the ride, even though it bothers him “like dancing up all night” (usually dancing all night = loneliness; so even though he's about to have some great sex! ). So they get started & things get wild; & even though they know what they're doing is wrong (whether its cheating or whatever), but its still giving them a rush. "The stranger's candy takes you where you ought to be: in broken alleys, in the back of every street. Close your eyes, tonight" ... I think people are taking this wayy too literally lol. I see it as more of a metaphor. ; everyone knows not to take candy from a stranger, & if you do, then you deserve to be in a broken alley! "Baby, you can have it” … Greg Pusiato sang that line just for me <3 “Ooh baby gnaw me, down to the bone; soon you'll find I'm never gonna take you back home. Well there's so much you never told me, and there's not much I want to know, cause your pretty face will do just fine: you'll be the star of my very last show. Let's go for a long ride, I'll show you places you won't ever want to leave” … He likes it rough lol, either that or she's starting to get under his skin. He has no further interest in this woman other than a future groupie, and he just keeps saying how good he is & will take her to another world “The stranger's candy takes you where you ought to be: in broken alleys, in the back of every street. The stranger's candy, in broken alleys” … againnn, what goes around comes comes around. Karma is a total bitch “Tonight we could bring it all down, we could bring it all down” …told you he likes it rough! “They think this body's a dead note, dancing to the beat; but they'll never see this corpse coming til it kills them” … people think he's some random guy dancing... little do they know ;) And then w the title, "Setting Fire to Sleeping Gisnts" ... sounds like a bsd idea to me hs |
