It seems like he's speaking of death. "With scarves of red tied around their throats/To keep their little heads/From falling in the snow" implies scarves dyed red with blood holding the heads on dead bodies of children (swallowed in their coats implies youth). "And, Michael, you would fall/And turn the white snow red as strawberries/In the summertime" implies the head of one particular child (Michael) fell from his body, not sufficiently held up by the scarf. I'm not sure what the first line means though. criticism is welcome. |
