The second and third verses clearly deride our collective amnesia of the Holocaust. "The final solution's back in style We are the ones letting it ride" So I would think Glen probably had a 90's genocide on his mind (Coil being released in 1997), possibly Rwanda 1994 seems likely, and by all means pertinent: there is no explanation for the world's failure to intervene in Rwanda. But I can only speculate. (Or this could be metaphorical, but I tend to doubt that.) I do agree the refrain harkens to Niemoeller's "First they came..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came I find the first verse and the refrain especially haunting. And the music is phenomenal, of course. |

I dug up some live versions of this song on youtube so I could pin down that 4th line. It should be: "Her image, beneath me" You need to listen to multiple versions to get it clearly, but that's definitely what Phil said. I played this song at my high school baccalaureate (ages ago, before Darrell was killed)... it rocked really hard. I remember spending two 12 hour sessions trying to learn all that fantastic guitar work (and I doubt I did it incredibly accurately, but probably good enough to fool most fans). RIP Darrell. |
