Florence + the Machine – Breaking Down Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. It has a generally upbeat feel to it, which contrasts with the theme of either loneliness or depression. I like the upbeat feel because it's like it's saying-- it doesn't matter the circumstance, it doesn't matter if I'm having fun, or if I feel OK, inevitably the loneliness and depression will creep back in.

Florence + the Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think we've all got a firm grasp on this song.. the only thing I'd like to add is something about the Midas reference. I doubt Florence meant it this way since she's not american- though I'm sure she is aware of the music here. But you know, we have "hit makers" here. They're probably all over the world, but since I'm american, I am most familiar with the ones here. But we have these producers and stuff who produce HITS. Fun songs with catchy hooks, infectious beats... and very little attention to lyrical content. But they're fun summer songs. It's your favorite song for about a month but then you get sick of it cause it's just a shallow pop song. I like to believe she is saying that a singer needs to be wary of these producers with the midas touch, because it too is a curse.

but it's a fantastic song! It sounds so ethereal and it has like a pagan goddess feel. It's like floaty.. It seems like she could be levitating at any given moment due to this song.

Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics 15 years ago
One thing I think is obvious- the girl is young. The "step on the cracks" part.. well.. I'm surprised at some people's interpretation. It's clearly a young girl hoping on a sidewalk singing "don't step on the cracks or you'll break your mothers back!"

To me this sounds like it was based after an old scary folktale. a story that doesn't actually exist, but that's the vibe I get. Like the story would be about a man who cut out a young girl's eye. It sounds like a story that would be told during a sleepover or while camping! Here's a bit of the "story"

Once, in a little village, down a little road, there was a little house, that contained a little girl. Folks around town called her the one-eyed girl cause she had this bad habit of winking at people. At a young age it got her a laugh, but now that she was a bit older, and a bit too pretty, it got her whatever she wanted. Her mamma always told her to watch that eye, one day it was gonna get her in trouble. And one day, it did.

and well, the song kind of goes from there :P She winks at the wrong guy who takes it the wrong way. When it becomes clear she didn't mean the wink how he'd hoped, he was embarrassed. And pissed. Like another poster said, sometimes there is an anger toward really beautiful women- and sometimes if they're sexually assaulted they "had it coming." So the "singer" is sort of justifying is actions... The song to me gets a bit.. like.. demonic. You know, when the chorus comes in at "CRYYYY". I feel like this is just a story about a really cruel man and an innocent girl. He just totally misconstrues all of her innocent actions as sinister or more mature than she intended.

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 15 years ago
You are all WRONG!!! no but seriously, my idea of the song is radically different from everyone elses. I think this song is about falling in love and she's right on the verge of making a big commitment.
"Dog days" to me means dog days of summer. the hottest days of summer, and the laziest days of summer cause it's too damn hot to do anything.

So it's like in a relationship, the beginning, kind of the easy parts, are the dog days. But those days are over. She's on the cusp of a REAL relationship- things are about to get intense. It's do or die. She's scared. She can run and hide from it, run fast home to her mother, father, everyone, and leave all of her love and longing behind...

"Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head." It was sudden. She realized that this relationship was something real. I feel like she avoided talking about it by kissing and drinking and just all sorts of merriment.

It can be kind of scary, you know? "I never wanted anything from you. Oh except everything you had and what was left after that too." Maybe she thinks the guy is asking too much.

So that's my view of it. It's not a bad relationship. She's just scared. You know, sometimes when things get really serious, one person might run away cause they're scared of commitment. There's a real sense of urgency in this song-- I love it.
