"It feels a lot like Pirate Jenny in that the situation feels so hopeless there isn't even any fantasy of escape that doesn't rely on some huge external force the singer will never see." I think that's a really good insight. At a concert, John Darnielle said that the song is about feeling that you have to leave your abusive home, but at the moment you're stuck there because you're too young or don't have enough money, or have no other place to go. So in the meantime, you fantasize about various deus ex machinas, like Batman pulling up in his Batmobile to take you away. |
