I think the theme of the song is fairly apparent: it's about an intimate relationship that lasted a summer. I don't know if there is supposed to be a deeper symbolism to that, but I believe he is mostly trying to capture the feeling of that. It's very autumnal and expresses a sense of nostalgia. I'm not sure if I agree entirely with ad!eu about José being cynical, but I think there is something experienced, seasoned, and maybe a little jaded about his tone. He sounds to me as if he's just brushing the whole feeling off like "that's the way things are..." Also, I think the broken arrows may be referencing Cupid's arrows and would then symbolize the ended relationship. As an opening line that really sets the stage for the song. |
