Joanna Newsom – '81 Lyrics 13 years ago
(this is all I have because it's awfully late but:)

"Tell me what is meant by sitting alone in a garden,
Seceded from the Union in the year of 'A.D. 1?"

The garden is Eden, obviously, and it 'seceded' from the 'union' in A.D. 1 (Christ's death). I am assuming that the union is heaven, or referring to some celestial being/place.

Therefore: what is the point of sitting alone in a garden that is no longer holy?

This song is not about losing your virginity, I have no idea where that came from.

I do have reason to believe that it is meant to say, 'I do not care what you believe in, I'll invite you to my garden party.'

"We broke our hearts in the war between
St. George and the dragon
But both in equal parts are welcome to come along
To come along, I'm inviting everyone"

Referencing what jkdeadite said about St. George defeating the dragon and converting everyone from Paganism to Christianity, I believe she is stating that she and everyone else got hurt in the 'fighting' that took place between those two religions, but 'both in equal part are welcome to come along'.

She's saying that everyone's invited to her garden. To paradise. To heaven; regardless of beliefs.

No, it's not a song of loss. Nor is she heartbroken. Sure, she's sad that he's leaving or has left; but she's content. She doesn't regret her time with him, she's thanking him for all he's done for her and taught her. And maybe, one day, they'll met again.

I've listened to this song since before I could even speak English...that was my interpretation. Her voice gives me goosebumps.
