Iron & Wine – Teeth in the Grass Lyrics 15 years ago
teeth in the grass = tombstones
everything else is interchangeable and used as a motif to push the main symbol:
when we're finally in love and there's nothing left to fight for, there'll be teeth in the grass.

Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone with You Lyrics 15 years ago
hmm. You don't have to be anywhere near religious to sing about spirituality and history, which this is about. And passion. It could have nothing to do with specifics such as Jesus, although it most likely does. The entire album Seven Swans relates much to Christianity and the Bible, and yet Sufjan Stevens isn't necessarily religious. It just goes to show that it really doesn't have to do with what you do and don't believe in, it's about introspective and passionate accounts of faith. And we all know that faith can be religious or nonreligious, which makes anything written about Jesus in these songs redundant, theoretically. This is not "Christian music."

it's "we're living in the shadow of..." not "And leave it in the shadows" (from digital booklet of the EP)

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 15 years ago
and to add to this, the opening lyric "Was a long and dark december" was apparently a random phrase which the band had produced, long ago before any prospect of the Viva La Vida album had come across, let alone the actual song Violet Hill, just to furthermore the fact that the song is more about theme than actual immediate statement.

Great song, musically speaking the structure of this song is quite beautiful, because of the ambient guitar layers and heavy reverb I not only hear U2 but also a bit of Echo and the Bunnymen, interestingly. And when Chris dips in and out of various time signatures in the ending piano piece, while normally it would seem confusing he's smoothed it over incredibly well.

As for the song meaning...let's not forget that this song (and the entire album, for that matter), was themed to be during the 16th century French Revolution. So while the song does have to do with Chris's perspective on necessary vs over the top, man vs man theme, it was basically more theme than actual meaning on a soldier or possibly just average citizen's take on the revolution. Take the song "Prospekt's March" into consideration, for example. While the song has little relation to the songwriter's (Chris Martin) life, or at least none that we can easily interpret, in other words are meant only to be meaningful towards the writer, the song was focused more on the theme and the music than any kind of social/conventional statement.
