I always thought he was referring to Thomas Wolfe's novel "Look Homeward, Angel." Hence, the reference to "How many angels can you fit upon a match?" And the cradle for a cat could easily be referring to the fact that Look Homeward, Angel is the story of the protagonist's coming of age, which Cats in the Cradle is a song by Harry Chapin which is about the coming of age of a little boy and the relationship with his father.
Anyway, just a theory.
Also, to complete the line, Hemingway committed suicide, so that lyric is almost self explanatory. |
