Interesting interpretations... I wanna say that this is a breakup song... There's a dialogue going on with his inner consciousness (aka señor) while trying to regain a lost love.. whilst also at some sort of a crossroads with a positive (lincoln county rd.) or negative (armageddon) outcome. The binary, positive/negative outcome is described with the wicked wind blowing on the upper deck vs. the iron cross still hangin down from around her neck. There's an uncertainty between what he can expect when she comes through, but hope that there may be some comfort there. The conclusion of this "marching band is still playing in the vacant lot" is a metaphor for strong feelings for this person, but also a vacancy left by her absence. The stripping and kneeling thing is all about letting his guard down, which Dylan clearly could only ever do in some sort of intiment situation.. the rest turns spiritual awakening i reckon, as he was a changed dude after this heartbreak... Thank god he had his heart smashed though, otherwise we never woulda had such awesome lyrics |
