Michael Stipe has a history of writing slightly sinister love songs about obsession and betrayal that are frequently mistaken for straightforward, sweet love songs.
"The One I Love" and "Losing My Religion" are famous examples, but this and "Strange Currencies" definitely fit in that pattern. |

This Michael Stipe quote is included on this song's Wikipedia page. For some reason, I find it really touching:
"I had a dentist in Los Angeles, who was also a dentist to Martin Sheen, and Martin Sheen was in the dentist's chair, getting his tooth drilled, when I went up to him and said, 'We have a record coming out in a couple of weeks and you're mentioned in one of the songs, and I just want you to know that it's honoring you; I don't want you to think that we're making fun of you.' And he was saying [impression of Sheen speaking with the dentist working on his mouth] 'Thank you very much!'. He was very nice about it." |

Your world, it is beautiful
I'll take the subway to your suburb sometime
I'll seek out the places that must have been magic to your little-girl mind
This part is beautiful and hilarious. |

This is such a beautiful song.
It's also not the first time John has written about antidepressants; "Amitrypteline," from "Life and Death," is one of my absolute favorites, in the form of a farewell letter from a person court ordered to go on medication. |

This belongs on "Is This Desire?" between "No Girl So Sweet" and the closing track, in my opinion. Incredible. |

No Phil Spector production is complete without the '50s production.
This song rules. And seems designed to scare the hell out of any fan of early Cohen. |

Lastly, I think "kissed and fail" should be "kissed and fell."
There must be a reason why such an incredible song was left off of "Is This Desire?". The song seems a bit lighter and more inviting than much of that album, and the lyrics more directly personal than narrative. (Even if the lyrics on the album are deeply personal, PJ uses seemingly fictional names and character sketches -- Angelene, Joy, Elise, Catherine -- and literary references as a barrier between herself and the song. Here (and on many of her other albums) there is no such barrier.) |

This is an absolutely breathtaking song about lost love. It's hard not to connect.
This is truly the best reason to track down the "Is This Desire?" bonus disc. |
