| Not derogatory at all in the Latin culture. When a Latino wants to say something derogatory, he is not going to waste time with subtlety & obvious misunderstanding of using that word. He will use other words that come right to the point, believe me. You are not understanding the connotations of that word in that culture at all. This person is so wrong!!!!!! Don't believe him! He really is as his handle says. No where in any spanish-speaking country is the term racist or derogatory. Only in the United States and only by some people is the term considered derogatory. In the Latin culture, the term is a perfectly acceptable term for referring to a person of mixed heritage. It means nothing bad. In this case, there is a comma before the word and an "a" at the end of the word, so he is using the word as a reference to the lady that he is trying to seduce with the song. So, put in your favorite English word, e.g. "baby" |

Oye Como Va mi ritmo = Listen to my rhythm Bueno pa' gozar, mulato = Good to enjoy, baby (or cutie, girl, ... ) whatever you want to put in that sounds flattering. Note, the comma after the "good to listen to" The reference to Mulato is being used in a flattering way to refer to the lady he is speaking with, as a term of endearment, NOT to call her a prostitute as one person said which would definitely cause her to LEAVE IN A HUFF which is NOT what the song is designed to do. It's a song of seduction, not a song of hate. Instead of scrounging around in the dark with barely the understanding of the language, either ask someone who understand the culture and language or search on the Internet a little further. It is properly translated in countless places. Spanish isn't even my first language and I would know that a comma means SOMETHING!!! |
