This song is a political song about the times today. "Afraid of Everyone" refers to the anxiety of everyday Americans. "With my kid on my shoulders.."..just a regular American Dad. "Star Spangled Tennis SHoes" could represent the once nationalism of America this person once felt or again, an illusion to an everyday American because he is wearing tennis shoes made in America which means he doesnt have the money to buy fancy shoes made in Europe. Or, again, they represent his nationalism..with his pride he is ready to fight. He isn't exactly hopeless. "Orange umbrella" refers to the orange alerts when terrorism is high threat. Its just an umbrella that is meant to shield us and that is all. Blue bodies w/ the red violets is meant to represent the deaths of soldiers. Lay the blue bodies with the red violets=put the blue bodies with the senators/congressmen that called the war. They need to see the deaths they cause. "I don't have the drugs to sort it out"=there are no drugs to cure this kind of anxiety. Great song...love it! Very political!!! |

The narrator is tickled by this lady he is infatuated with. I am not sure if he has been dating her for a while or if she is new. Maybe we know he has been seeing her for a while as he writes "a cocktail dress that your mother wore." This could mean he knows her and has known her, he knows her family and such. OR, this lady is wearing a really out of fashion dress. He then juxtaposes "wet martini in a paper cup." When one thinks martini, they think of class and fancy...but a martini in a paper cup? "Eyes are broken bottles..and Im afraid to ask". She's got some issues, but the narrator doesnt really think that much of her issues. He just states he "is afraid to ask". He then goes on to say "your all humming live wires under your killing clothes." She is on fire underneath as well. Wasp nest means she has some issues and is on fire. This lady needs to get herself together. I'm thinking the narrator and this lady had a fight before their party. He is trying to make the best of it by looking at all her quirks despite that she needs to put herself together. |
