This song was written in reference to the Cobain wedding. Scott has had a long history of longing for Courtney Love (why, I don't know) and her marriage to Mr. Nirvana himself virtually devastated Scott.
Pay close attention to the lyrics next time you hear the song and you be the judge.
Tool and Filter have also made obvious references to the Nirvana frontman.

This song is about an abortion decision Scott Weiland and his wife were faced with. Stone Temple Pilots performed it live for the first time on VH1 Storytellers in 2000, and the song was inspired by what Scott Weiland called "a painful and heartbreaking experience, when a former partner and I went through an abortion. It was a difficult choice for both of us. But thank god we were able to have that choice." |

Dean DeLeo commented to Musicradar.com on the jingly tune, which contrasts with the dark lyrics: "The yin-yang thing in the band is always there. Musically, I was somewhere else. As the guitarist, it was very interesting painting with these bright colors and using certain Tele tones. Since I was in my teens, I've been such a fan of that cool single-coil sound and playing a lot of jangly chord patterns. I'm pretty happy with my solo - it's a real twister."

| Stone Temple Pilots – Take A Load Off Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
Guitarist Dean DeLeo told Musicradar.com about the song: "To me, there's two types of people: there's thinkers and there's feelers. The thinkers are lawyers and accountants. The feelers are writers and artists. When I hear this song, I'm thinking that everybody can be in that second category. Musically, it gets me off like you wouldn't believe. I love the chord voicings, which are a little Jimmy Pagey, I guess. Plus, the band is really playing balls-out on this song. When we got back together and played live on the road, we had some hot coals in our pants. This song reflects that spirit."

| Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song Lyrics

In Stone Temple Pilots appearance on VH1's Storytellers, Scott Weiland explained that the band would travel in a Winnebago that pulled a trailer with their equipment. When band members wanted some quiet, they would go in the trailer with a walkie-talkie. Robert DeLeo was back there with his guitar one day when he came up with the music for the song, and he used the walkie-talkie to call to the band and play it for them. Weiland added: "The words are about the lies I was trying to conceal while making the Purple record."

One of the deepest most philosophical songs Scott Weiland has ever written, along with "Sin" that also seems to deal with religion or faith. Still makes no sense to me why the critics were so harsh to STP with their debut album. I see very little parallels with them and Pearl Jam

This song is really dark and scary to me. "Sink into the wholes in my eyes" Very disturbing. It's a perfect song for a horror movie. When ever I play this song I alway ALWAYS reminded of people that have caused me pain. And it is soothing when bad memories come up.

Guitarist Dean DeLeo explained the song title to Musicradar.com: "There's a very good reason why it's titled Fast As I Can, because it's the fastest song we ever recorded. I think it's something like 196bpms. That's like, way fast!"

robert deleo on song writing
Robert: "There's no rules to writing songs. I try to be the best person I can be in life, but there's always times when I feel like I want to walk off a cliff. And if I don't walk off the cliff, at least I go visit the cliff and that's where I choose to write songs. It makes for good songs. There are many different aspects in life to absorb from and extract from. Being on the cliff always seems to be the best place for me."

"Is it a hickory hypothesis / Or one-man show?" - appears to acknowledge his functional detente with the band. "I need my bus with my assistant so I can work on other business," he told Spin magazine. "Besides, I don't like to sleep in a submarine anymore. We leave at different times. They like that vibe of having the elaborate dressing rooms, and I could give a s--t. I wanna do the show and go to the next place."

| Stone Temple Pilots – Vasoline Lyrics

When flies get stuck in Vaseline, it's not pretty. They're not killed instantly, but struggle until finally meeting their doom. Scott Weiland, who wrote the lyrics, elaborated on the metaphor in an appearance on VH1's Storytellers, saying the song is about "feeling like an insect under a magnifying glass."

Contains one of the best STP lines ever, "I'm losin' a game of reality dice where the dealer never, never pays." It's one of those clever metaphors in a song that really hits you and then makes you relate it to the harder times of your own life

Scott Weiland has refused to comment on the song. It could be about Courtney Love, as the lyrics describe a woman who berates a man in a Rock band until he kills himself. Wieland and Love spent some time together in the late '90s.
