I totally agree with you on that. This song deals with the SNL incident. I really think this was something that caused a deep trauma in John at that time, since he even makes a reference in the infamous Dutch interview, though not literally. There he mentions how being kicked in the thighs by "someone who you look up to as the role model of masculinity" may alter you. The interviewer thought he was referring to his own father, but he wasn't, he was referring to Anthony, who he used to admire before joining the band. By the way, Anthony's kick was intentional, as he confessed in his own autobiography, apparently because John's rendering of Stone Cold Bush was a true torture to him and his voice. Besides it was pretty obvious that John was experimenting with the chords (on a live tv show!) due to the fact that he was using, and Anthony couldn't stand that kind of behaviour at the time due to his own process of rehab, as you yourself already mentioned on your post. The part where he sings "And I will play a song of thunder you may recognize" is a pretty obvious reference to John's vengeful rendering of Under the Bridge right after that, when he turned his guitar up to maximum volume and made himself hoarse from shouting the vocals at the end of the song. He did that to piss Anthony off because he knew it was always a diffcult song for him to sing. I guess that's why he says "look out for yourself tonight". It's a warning that the revenge is going to take place for sure! ha ha Anyways, Anthony wasn't even aware of the effect that kick had had on John until some years later, when Flea talked to him about how young John used to feel whenever they teased him and stuff. Anthony never despised John, in fact he really appreciated him both as a friend and as an artist, but he had a strange way of showing his affections then, you know, he didn't want to "compromise his masculinity" by being too tender and stuff, and he never figured out then how sensitive John was at that point. |
