Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics 15 years ago
To speak on what I think it is getting at, is simply addiction. I don't say that in any authoritative position but maybe just from a bias one. Having gone through my own personal struggle with prescription pills and getting tangled in a nearly word for word type relationship as the first verses suggest it's just how I interpret it. It also occurred to me that it appears the first verse is a man's story being told to a friend about his girlfriend and the second from the perspective of the same man speaking for the friend about his family. It mentions wait all night which suggests again only from a personal standpoint that A) The "We" is to be He and a friend(s) being that the second line implies her as being a different entity B) they are not doing much of anything but keeping each other company and maybe getting high. C) thats there's enough time to kill to be anticipating the argument "wait all night". the next line says shes bound to run amok(which means rampant with rage or something to the drastic extent) like she will be upset that He A) used again B) are hanging around friends that lead you down this so called "low road" when shes been waiting. the next line refers to be invested in it enough anyhow quickly followed by to each his own. that to me is a representation of the relationship and how he feels he had always been the same and never wanted to get serious in fear that "She" would want him to stop so "He" doesn't give into the temptation of being a prick because She has openly given herself to him in a physical way in attempt to open his mind to the idea of life without this solidarity and pain but he rejects that yet never openly refutes. He's too caught up in his addiction to care, too apathetic and just want peace and to not be judged. "The garden" or promised life we dream up needs sorting out or to be fixed as "She" puts a gun to it and "He" can't feel anything(not knowing if he's alive). The chorus is pretty self explanatory and the second verse doesn't as closely relate to me but still is powerful about "His" friend's problems with his family. The line that refers to him as not knowing whether he is alive is very powerful because in the second he is not only talking for his friend but mentions that the dead cannot talk which implies the reason why he is talking on behalf of his friend...a very drab drab song sang and performed in a powerful and light way. LOVE IT

Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics 15 years ago
to me this song is very religious but not in the obvious way...Its more a song about his problem with the spiritual base he was raised on...throughout the entire song he uses very noticeable remarks to the Christian religion whether its peter talking to paul about the rules they wrote( parts of the bible) and how when you feel something in life more tangible than faith(true love with a person you can see and feel) you are willing to throw the rules away to make it work...he then proceeds to talk about what i see as clear statement about spreading faith with the dove metaphor..the dove representing the faith and its turn into a dragon as the urgency to convert..he then talks about the keys being locked inside the kingdom which i see as a representation of him not being willing to speak of his religious beliefs to his love(the girl) bc they might scare her away..the whole time he sees this girl as pure and good and fighting for her life in a war..and how if there isn't divine intervention then god and his angels can go to hell bc shes to good not to get into heaven or be happy on morals, beauty, and innocence alone. at the end of each verse there is a hurt...whether its laurel begging hardy for a gun(showing mass depression) to turning up the music and hoping she makes it through(being overwhelmed and out of control)to the champagne growing stagnant and flat and being left with rain(or emptiness and unfulfilled desire) I personally see this as a conflict song. about him knowing what he was raised on and has believed but doesnt understand why god must be so selfish to only take the one who love him and not all the people with good intentions and good hearts
