Meshuggah – Pineal Gland Optics Lyrics 10 years ago
Artificial the catalyst
Organic its progeny

Molecule structures and chemical compounds created by man can cause the brain to experience a reality completely outside of the known universe, but the individual chemicals themselves and the hormones your body produces are organic to life and the universe.

Synaptical glitch looking glass
So enticing, real and free of lies

Essentially the compounds made by man can cause your brain's programming to "glitch" resulting in a new reality and perspective. It opens your mind beyond what you once thought reality was and gives a glimpse into how vast and strange life and the universe can be.

These authoritive visions order my collective senses,
My questioning, doubtful, rigid self to kneel
A judas syndrome in effect
Former self the deceiver
Its denial the wretched kiss
That kept this in disguise

The Judas Syndrome can be described as someone with a good intention acting in ignorance, ultimately leading to something extremely opposite and unexpected. Before anyone takes hallucinogens for the first time, they don't know what to expect, but they imagine visions and feelings and acting different. No one can expect or describe the total, complete new sense of perspective. Your static, stable mind could have never predicted something so bizarre.

A new set of eyes cleansed by a new belief

You are never quite the same after experiencing what most refer to as a "third eye" opening experience. It gives most people a sense of awe, respect, and curiosity for the universe

Crystal Castles – Tell Me What to Swallow Lyrics 12 years ago
I feel like the song title is saying what drugs do you need to take to make the painful memories and scars of your childhood to cease to exist.

Crystal Castles – Celestica Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't stop thinking about the universe around us when listening to this. I feel if this song pays some sort of homage to the man who died in the plastic factory, it's about how matter is exchanged in the universe. Never created or destroyed, only moved or rearranged. The elements you're composed of when you die will continue on in this place of nowhere because woven into the universe is a seemingly unbreakable law of balance. Human life is fragile and easily taken, but your components are never taken anywhere. They will always reside within this universe.

Just my 2 cents. Meh.

Crystal Castles – Suffocation Lyrics 12 years ago
I'll add that it might make these thoughts reflect back on the writer and they may feel like no longer existing because they, in turn, are also impulsive and destructive. Anyway, Alice singing this song gives me the warm and fuzzies.

Crystal Castles – Suffocation Lyrics 12 years ago
It sounds like it's being said by someone who can only see the impulsive and destructive nature in human beings. To this person, morality and intelligence is a guise we fool ourselves with because we're afraid of what only exists in our minds, not in our nature. If I thought everyone in the world was my enemy, I''d feel suffocated as well.

Pinback – Clemenceau Lyrics 14 years ago
Pretty sure it's about Georges Clemenceau. I'm almost positive. Versailles is on the same album and Georges was a big part in the Treaty of Versailles.

Pinback – Trainer Lyrics 14 years ago
From the start it seems the song is about perception and how different people see things in an entirely different point of view, "Two that look won't see the same thing." "Some will pass and some will stay" to me seems to be a test of critical or analytic thinking. Some people choose to think outside the box and some are fine with not questioning anything around them. "Stick your arm inside the mirror" sounds like dreaming especially with the next line "Crawl back into bed." The "mirror" world of dreams where everything seems real and logical, but is false. This could be said to be a strong metaphor for what life really is. "Who is the hood and who is the victim." In life and the universe, it seems hard to tell who is the good guy and who is really the bad guy. Some people value human life in high regard and treat it like we are somehow "chosen." Other people see human life as just another life form on Earth or even a virus to the Earth. That we are not special in any way, just egotistic/narcissistic. "What is sand? What is the ocean?" If you really get down to the basics, everything is made of what is inside the universe, making it all basically come from the same source. It's all connected to the periodic table. Though from human interaction, they are entirely different. The last lines are foggy to me, other than explaining fear.

It is very possible 49531 is just there to make people think about what it means when it really means nothing, which is a statement in itself.

Modest Mouse – Never Ending Math Equation Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm the same as I was when I was six years old

(Deep down we all come from a human base you could say. Even an 80 year old man was 6 once. Nothing changes except thoughts, ideas, looks, and philosophy.)

And oh my God, I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything

(I think here he is saying from his age changing from 6 till now, he has never felt the presence of a deity.)

On a plane, I can see the tiny lights below
And oh my God, they look so alone
Do they really feel anything?

(I interpreted this as other planets and if they feel anything at all because Earth itself is living, but what is really the point of having non living planets? Do they feel anything at all?)

Oh my God, I've got to, got to, got to, got to move on
Where do you move when what you're moving from
Is yourself?
(This is a great lyric worded so well. Its a deep psychological question)

The universe works on a math equation
That never even ever really ends in the end

(Infinity or circles is the way everything seems to work or fall into place, yet this is a paradox and a fallacy. That's just the way things are.)

Infinity spirals out creation

(This...system if you call it, created us. Without the process of infinity, we would not exist)

We're on the tip of its tongue, and it is saying

(An interesting lyric here. I interpreted this as saying we're on the tip of the universe's tongue as if it knows us (think of it as a deity...whatever), but it just can't quite remember. It's still vivid, it just can't find the right path to get to us)

We ain't sure where you stand
You ain't machines and you ain't land
And the plants and the animals, they are linked
And the plants and the animals eat each other

(This lyric is probably one of my favorites by Modest Mouse ever. We aren't machines because we cause war, lie, cheat, steal, kill, things like that; yet we are not land as in we didn't fully come from the Earth itself because we aren't linked with the other organisms that inhabit this planet. We are alone in our struggle. The plants and animals work on the process of infinity. An infinite cycle of recycle. One could say we may be the organisms that broke free from infinity itself.)

Oh my God, and oh my cat

(I believe he means to say we put God up on a pedestal, but if you look at the nature of things, God would be equal to us just like another organism.)

I told my Dad what I need
Well, I know what I have and want
But I don't know what I need

(Dad could be interpreted as God here and people as children being childish saying they need something (like heaven or an afterlife) but not really knowing what we need because we simply do not know.)

Well, he said, he said, he said, he said
"Where we're going, I'm dead"

(This is...a difficult lyric. The only sense I got out of this is that we are all part of God's afterlife. Maybe Isaac read the book God's Debris. Great book)

Modest Mouse – Willful Suspension of Disbelief Lyrics 15 years ago
Aside from the heaven/hell theme, the lyrics "It's all so plain" stick out to me more than anything. Some people (with obviously not enough respect for the earth, universe, and the like) think the world is too plain and boring so there obviously HAS to be something better beyond life on Earth. Whether there is or isn't is an argument not worth having, but anyone who doesn't acknowledge how utterly amazing and astonishing the: Earth, matter, other lifeforms, other planets, galaxies, and the universe are, are destined to be searching for something that exists only in their own imagination. The brain is a lot more powerful than we think it is. Our creator created us, but we created our own utopias within our minds

Circa Survive – Dyed in the Wool Lyrics 15 years ago
It's so sad for us
when we find ourselves
giving away

(Not too sure what this first lyric means but I'm guessing it just means giving away like to give way or fall apart)

and it's a shame for us
when we find ourselves
going to waste

(It is rather shameful to find yourself going to waste after looking around and seeing all the things that could have happened, all the mistakes that could have been prevented.)

so throw away the love that we made.

(Would you rather feel sad or ashamed?)

(i know i know)
and nothing's going to change that hopeless feeling
I get when you say you'll understand and I know you can't

(Obviously talking about something to do with a person very close to him that will simply never understand what he is feeling or trying to convey and the hopelessness that goes along with it. It is a double meaning as well that when we're young, we try to understand the universe and try to find some meaning behind it. This lyric is speaking from the higher power's point of view saying it feels hopelessness when you try because you simply cannot understand.)

There's no reason to be here
we should pack up and leave
I have never felt that way before totally alone

(No one truly knows the purpose of life so there is no reason to be here, but this is only felt by someone that is lonely. What a strange predicament.)

there's no reason to leave
I have never seen you act that way before
totally exposed.
As you throw away the love that we made

(coming back to the second verse, Anthony is talking about someone feeling ashamed. Another meaning would be a higher power being ashamed of us so it simply throws away the love that we have for it.)

(i know i know)
and nothing's going to change that hopeless feeling
I get when you say you'll understand and I know you can't

The longer it takes the more it goes to waste

(The more time you spend trying to figure out why we are here and for what reason, the more it goes to waste.)

I want to believe you but I can't feel a thing

(Speaking from a higher power's point of view saying that it wants to believe you can find the answer but it cannot feel anything that would lead it to believe that you would)

the more that you get the less you are

(The more information you think you receive about the purpose of being, you literally become less of a person)

and nothing's going to change that helpless feeling
I get when you say you'll understand and I know you can't...

...and I know you can't help this feeling I get when you say you'll understand,
and I know you can't

(Pure Hopelessness. Possibly what this entity feels all the time.)

Almost all of Anthony's lyrics have double meaning and that's why they are so good. That he can pair the tangible with the intangible. I tried to decipher this as best I could since this is my favorite song besides Frozen Creek but tell me what you think Anthony. Am I right? :)

Say Anything – Mara and Me Lyrics 15 years ago
there are babies with guns beheading their friends
in shopping malls around the world

(I believe this lyric points to how blind and juvenile some people are that they would betray their friends without first pointing the gavel at themselves. It could also have some gang related meaning that says we're all the same or are friends of each other but don't know it and we choose to kill one another for pointless causes)

yet somehow the kings of leon
still have time to write songs about girls

(Irony on the first lyric)

i don't suck much less
at least those dudes have no illusions of angst and hopelessness
and if i claim revolutionary or i give to charity
they'll all know it's a plea for someone like me

(I think he is saying that doing good deeds or claiming you are some sort of revolutionary is just a shield to cover up for your inner demons to show that you aren't a bad person)

disgusted with lies and cut down by their own beatnik poetry
i'm just one man with no face and no friends
god in this dank brooklyn bar i can feel it again
it's eating me

(Hopelessness)

wait a second- i can't write the same damn song over and over again

(He can't repeat history or make the same mistakes twice because you wouldn't learn anything. Any logical person would identify them doing the same bad things over and over again)

i can't define myself through irony and self deprecation

(Describing yourself in irony would be if you were using false personality traits to cover up what you really are feeling and self deprecation is simply putting yourself down)

i can't deny myself being alive through my alienation

(If you're alienated from others, all you really have is yourself, so you cannot deny or put off your existence)

everything that you do keeps me running back to you
can't give up, live the dream even if i don't believe
but we can't afford to surrender

(Double meaning here in my opinion. It could be talking about someone doing hurtful things to keep someone coming back almost like baiting someone but you can't afford to surrender because defeat is death. The other meaning would be a higher power that you recognize even if you don't believe in it and cannot look away from it while it constantly tells you to never give in.)

fake players and the twisted web they weave

(Talking about people who plot for other people's demise by catching them in their web when they least expect it)

i contend that the coming holocaust will be of those who choose to believe

(Double meaning once again. First meaning is that if you believe and trust these people, your downfall will be harsh, slow, and painful. The other meaning in my opinion is believing in something higher will be your ultimate downfall because you may be setting yourself up for something that doesn't exist. Basically a waste of time.)

in anything but a phallic sense of self

(The above lyric is tied to this as well saying that if you don't believe and recognize that you have a power inside you...)

hang alone in the attic, tied up tightly with your father's belt

(...This may be your outcome)

you bathe in blood like mister crowley
your cost, their loss. their memory haunts me
i stand opposed to chaos that you chose
new heart, new bones
am i not alone?

fake players are the ones who play the game

(that's my interpretation. probably different than most)
