| The lyrics combined with the video have kind of an Orwellian/Huxley(ian?) thing going on. The song seems to be about being distracted by the radio (which has since become the Internet) and unable to see through the illusionary sheen that fills the air -unable to tune into the real airwaves. People are locked in a bubble while the real world is rotting around them. | |

| I love this song, there's a specific subject in the lyrics but I like to interpret it more generally. I particularly like the way he used "stock exchanges" and also the talk of swarming self-esteem consultants because those people are usually dicks who love to tell you shit you already know like "look on the bright side" etc as though you're retarded or something. | |

Nice one :D I've heard it called "covert incest" Often occurs with marital breakdown -the parent looks to the child to fulfil the parent's needs (that they aren't getting from their partner). Favourite line: "I need your arms to welcome me but a cold stone's all I see." |

I relate to this song on such a personal level, its almost suffocating. I understand where all the talk of Icarus, religion etc is coming from, but I think that it can distract from what I feel is the core message of the song -at least for me- which is that of utter self-loathing. He basically believes that he is a parasite, and for this reason he should exist only in silence (if at all) to protect others from himself. Cornell was still 'coming down' off drug use at the time, and the idea of Icarus flying into the sun seemed to capture perfectly his addiction -the initial psychadelic period, followed by the terrifying fall. The talk of being buried and forgotten hearkens back to earlier lyrics such as 4th of July, where he talked about Jesus being buried alive. This concept of martyrdom is, I feel, an important part of his lyrics. Everytime I listen to Cornell's lyrics I am reminded of a certain Demotivational poster I used to see on my classroom wall in highschool: "Mistakes: It Could Be That The Purpose Of Your Life Is To Serve Only As A Warning To Others." Perhaps he believes he is that sinking ship? "The wreck is going down, get out before you drown" This does not exclude the wider social commentary implied in his lyrics. Anyway, I am glad this song was written because it puts a voice to his silence. In essence, the song itself is a victory. |

The film clip to me really enhances this song's meaning. Its about not dwelling too much on the more prosaic aspects of life, cos you wont get out alive. |

| Chris Cornell – Can't Change Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |

"Suddenly I can see everything that's wrong with me Yeah what can I do I'm the only thing I really have at all" This is the most important part of the song to me, and it has alot to do with 'fusion anxiety', which is a fear one's self being lost in another. He holds onto his old self, even if he sees it as wrong, because he feels the only other option is to merge with this idealised other, in which case he would cease to exist. |

| I have been reading a comic book at the moment called DMZ, about civilians caught in the midst of a civil war in America. I find this song to be particularly evocative of that story. | |
