OK, people are really missing some serious facts: 1. Both Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were originally cast in the role of Erik and Christine. HOWEVER, before filming could start, Brightman and Webber got a divorce, and everyone started harassing the two. It started out very civil, but eventually thats when it became bad, and she decided to not be part of the movie, and Michael decided to not be in it either because of it, which was probably what the people in the next reason wanted. 2. Producers. Producers. Producers. They have almost ALL say in ALL movies. No Exceptions. Sorry, if you thought otherwise. Gerard, not "Gerry", is a good actor and a heart-throb pretty boy, that is capable of drawing in thousands of teenage girls, and younger women. Don't lie, you know thats why most of you who hadn't seen the play or book yet watched the movie. He may be a good singer, but he isn't cut out for Erik. 3. Why is he not cut out? The book. Erik is supposed to have a perfect, and angelic, TONE! Huge difference between tone and singing voice. Tone is acheived through the amount of feeling you put into the words, the amount of power behind them. Think of it this way, person A and person B have extremely similar singing ability. Person A sings a love song to someone he doesn't truely love. Person B sings a love song to the woman he feels is his true love, or soul-mate for that matter. Who will sound better? Person B, of course, because he is putting his heart and soul into what he sings. Michael Crawford is a stage performer, and a darn good one at that. Stage performers, especially for musicals, have to perfect their ability to push their emotions out when singing, and Crawford is good enough at it to put the pain and anguish, as well as love into the song just as easily as walking. For the musical, the anger is supposed to be abnormal for the Phantom because he truely does love Christine and was forced to be the kind of "evil" person he is and so it should not sound truely hateful as Gerard makes it out to be. 4. Gerard is TOO good-looking for the movie, the very least they could have done was give him better make up when they removed his mask, but they knew that too many girls would whine about that, due to Gerards popularity with the ladies. All in all, no one is bashing Gerard for his singing ability, for that is not in question. What is in question is his ability to have hypnotic tone, which he does not. And for the producer's choices, which beat out Webber's choices every time. |
