| The Ocean – For the Great Blue Cold Now Reigns Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
OneWithTheOcean is sort of right. Yes, it is generally about the Ocean and its connection with the theme of this song, but it goes a lot deeper. This song is a firm statement about the absence of an afterlife, and how our bodies and corpses will do nothing after we die other than rot and make their way back to the sea. The clearest example of this is the lines "Only in death shall we be sage And see that heaven lies behind And we shall quake, reading those words on this book's final page: for the great blue cold now reigns." "Heaven lies behind" states that our paradise, our reward for making it through life, is life itself and the things we did in it. "We" is referring to the masses who generally believe that their good works, faith and dedication to their religion will grant them eternal happiness, but in reality they wasted away their lives in anticipation of another, rather than making the most of the one they had on Earth. There is nothing after life, only the ocean. |
