The song is gender ambiguous, because the words the narrator use for his lover can be taken both ways, in my opinion it is a song about a young couple eloping, and running off to san francisco. he is mocking their parents, asking her what will she do missing holidays with their families, and not having a definite place to stay when the run off to San Francisco, (How many nights of talking in hotel rooms can you take? How many nights of limping around on pagan holidays?) and ironically when they get there, a baseball game is being played, they go to see it, and they are talking about it, the home team is losing, and he is speaking on disdain for what the game has become (piazza's sexuality scandal was a big thing at the time it happened), the references to baseball seem more personal, like not just fanaticism, The narrator isn't just a watcher, he is a baseball player himself, and compares himself to certain players (Sandy Koufax, Mike Piazza) cause he himself is trying to make a living for himself and his lover playing ball, He is telling his lover that he would take care of her (or him) because he loves them, and when they tell the parents of them eloping, they offer criticism to their child and the narrator because they didn't approve of the relationship, but cant do anything about it now, so they tell him that he will take care of her, and he will do a good job at it, and he says maybe, but not what his lover deserves, because his lovers parents may believe they can do better than him, this line may also point out a failed attempt to play baseball, and not making it, so he and her are forced to work dead end jobs to make ends meat, These failures do not diminish his resolve to take care of his lover, and his love of his lover and the sport, he visits his lover at work in a restaurant or dinner, that looks like something out of the 1960's, and they talk about their relationship and baseball, and he tells his lover he will see them when they get back at the apartment after work. Things go sour, and he cant hack it as a pro baseball player and develops a drinking problem, his lover leaves him, but he still thinks about baseball and clings to his dream so he is praying for a way to become a baseball player because he believes if he can do that then things will work out, in essence, his dream has ruined his relationship, and what he thought would happen with him and his lovers life didn't, and he thinks life is more difficult than playing baseball, he starts to acknowledge his mistaken thinking when they ran off, and says he knew it wouldn't come to love, because he was unable to take care of his lover due to his fanaticism with baseball and wanting to go pro... toward the end of the song, you can see he misses his lover, and is trying to make amends, so he is going to meet his lover at the stadium by the aforementioned statue of Willie Mays in an hour... |
