| I agree with most of what you said. I read a little farther into "Now everybody's in the play, at least that's what the script told me to say" - it sounds to me like he's talking about how we're supposed to believe we're classless and everyone can make it to the top. | |
| Jason Mraz – Love For A Child Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think it's more about the things that cause the divorce - because really after parents who fight constantly split up, the child is in the end better off, as long as one of them doesn't use the child to get back at the other. | |

This is what this song means to me - I went into therapy about a year ago, and about 6 months in I realized that my husband of 11 years has been singing this to me since we met. The damage done to my heart by my dysfunctional family rendered me incapable of believing anyone really loves me. I believed I wasn't worthy of love. Now that I able to see what he was trying to show me all along, and now that I got past being angry with myself for being so blind - I am so grateful that he stuck by me with unconditional patience and love. I finally know and can recognize the love in my life. It took far too long, but here I am. So fathers be good to your daughters - and mothers be good to your daughters too. |

| Very close to my interpretation. After "There are still a few animals, Left out in the yard" is where my interpretation differs. I understood most of the rest of the song as describing how we have gone around the world using our military to try to get the "animals" that were still "left out in the yard" to embrace capitalism. | |
| Jack Johnson – All At Once Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| These posts kill me - it's like 70% of his music is about the state of the world and how we're in flux right now. Just the other day Jack posted something about the oil spill and all these people were like "Don't get political Jack!" Uhm - have you not been listening to his music? | |

I'm absolutely not saying he doesn't like Obama - nor would the song be. But there were many of us who expected a huge shift. Just watch the Yes we Can video and you'll feel it. What happened with HCR and a public option and a month before the oil spill he approved offshore drilling that he had said he was against. Obama's heart is in the right place, but he's been far apart from it on many occasions. I feel some disappointment because I expected him to take us to task for our individual personal responsibility for our future, with the chants of yes WE can, and we need it NOW more than ever with this oil spill. We're too busy blaming BP to see that we all have a responsibility in where we go from here. Jack does that in SO many of his songs. Sorry that I am misunderstood. I don't believe the song is contemptuous, but could be a testament to wanting so bad for him to lead us to the self determination many American's so desperately need. Instead they sit by being full of cynicism and therefore complacency, because they think there's too much they're up against so they might as well not bother. So soooo many of Jack's songs are about this, and I'm sure his hopes for what Obama could accomplish on the level of getting people's attention that YES WE CAN, are just as high as mine, and many other people's. And Obama seems to have stopped! You can't tell me the person in that Yes we can video, can't still motivate people like that! He can! Where'd it go? "All at once, The world can overwhelm me There's almost nothin' that you could tell me That could ease my mind Which way will you run When it's always all around you And the feelin' lost and found you again A feelin' that we have no control Around a sun Some say There's gonna be the new hell Some say It's still too early to tell Some say It really ain't no myth at all Keep askin' ourselves are we really Strong enough There's so many things that we got Too proud of We're too proud of We're too proud of I wanna take the preconceived Out from underneath your feet We could shake it off and instead we'll plant some seeds We'll watch em' as they grow And with each new beat From your heart the roots grow deeper The branches will they reach for what Nobody really knows But underneath it all There's this heart all alone What about when it's gone And it really won't be so long Sometimes it feels like a heart is no place to be singin' from at all There's a world we've never seen There's still hope between the dreams The weight of it all Could blow away with a breeze If you're waiting on the wind Don't forget to breathe Cause as the darkness gets deeper We'll sink until we reach for love At least somethin we can hold But I'll reach to you from where time just cant go What about when it's gone And it really won't be so long Sometimes it feels like a heart is no place to be singin' from at all " |

| This might sound completely crazy - but it shouldn't considering Jack. He definitely throws politics into his music, and something about "you broken king" and "drawing lines in the sand" which is a VERY common phrase in politics, alerted me to the fact that this song overall doesn't seem to be just a regular song about someone who isn't following their heart. To me it sounds like a song of disappointment with candidate Obama vs president Obama, that is being veiled with cliche lyrics to throw people off. | |
