The first verse kid cudi is explaining how he feels about his music and how others respond to it. "these voices they tell me go" "but why should I ever go" because cudis sound is so unique and different most people do no understand. And people fear what they do not understand. "man I'm so comfortable here" "why should I head to a place where people live in fear" he is comfortable because he is just being himself. And he asks mother moon (the music industry) why should I head to a place where I am afraid to be myself. He is talking of artists that have no voice literally slaves to the industry and only worried about if people like their music. They live in fear of expressing who the really are because they are afraid people will not accept them. The rest of verse is pretty self explanatory "mother moon tells me that people need my help" the music industry is calling out to kid cudi because he is not afraid to express himself and be real. Now that kid cudi told the moon how he feels the moon responds "you got to do it alone man, you got to do it alone" the song is about kid cudi but he uses it to show others that in life you have to express who you are and not be afraid of what others think because if you do you will never please everyone and be in constant fear of rejection. Cudi expresses his dream to one day help mother moon with his music and inspire other artists to help the music industry making it more creative and unique. |

| In this song kid cudi uses a literary device called allegory. Basically he is comparing the music industry to the moon and in this song cudi and the moon (music industry) are having a conversation. In the verses kid cudi is speaking to the moon. and the chorus the moon is responding. | |

| I know I wrote a shit load but Im not doin it to sound smart Im trying to show the haters that kid cudi is not just about getting high but about real Fu$&ing art. He is able to paint an image with words and music that you are able to connect and relate to. Not many artists especially not mainstream hip hop have the ability to use music to transcend your perspectiv and see through the artists mind. Kid cudi mixes cuts and paraleles words and verses in a way no one and I mean no one has ever been able to do before in the "rap" world. He has created a revolution from shallow hip hop to a an artful song that does not even fit a genere with real meaning and genius word play. And cudi achives all this just by being himself. in the end "I won't be afraid" to be myself no matter what others think of my music. I know the real creative ones the real people will understand and connect with it. In turn inspiring them to create and share their selves without fear of rejection or others opinions. For awhile we were alone but than cudi rose and gave us a voice and now instead of solo we fly together. a creative revolution | |

The verse immediatelly following the third. the last and final verse is ABSOLUTLEY ESSENTIAL to understanding the song. It practically mirrors the first only a few words are changed. Totally changing the meaning. Look at the verses side by side Verse1 Verse2 "listen good". "listen good" "I don't have nobody". "I don't NEED nobody" "but what I might feel are the sounds of sanity". "this is what YOU feel are the sounds of INsanity" "hoping what I hear loops itself continuously". "hoping what I hear loops itself TO FINISH ME" "then I won't be afraid--no no" "NO I WONT Be afraid--HEY HEY" |

The third verse is less symbolic and more straight forward. "my world turns flippin the bird" "to the ones who figure, me" "outcast no not the duo" he feels the world is sayin fu$& you because he is differqnt unique, an outcast. "back at shaker heights when they knew" "though little brother was a strange one boo hoo" "Cry me a river hater" shaker heights is the suburbs where cudi grew up shaker heights Ohio. And the people there understood him better although he was strange. Cry me a river haters one he uses to sail on later in the song. Haters fuel him. "floatin in my mind no sail" "ahoy" cudi kills the 3rd verse which is unique from the others becuase of it's simple meaning however it is elevated by the insane poetic breaking of words and syllables in creative ways never attempted before and unique to the individual song. |

I do not want to sound like a know it all but I need to stress the fact that this song is NOT all about getting high. Kid cudi is an artist and his masterpiece "solo dolo" contains complexities no other rapper would be able to so artfully convey. The meaning isn't as simple as a blazing session To better understand this song you must know the context. This song comes from his first album Man On The Moon, and the album is split into 5 different acts (another example of the man's creative genius) for a cinematic experience people can connect with more easily, a journey/oddysey into kid cudi's mind. Solo dolo takes place in act 2 called rise of the night terrors. We are sent to his nightmares and solo dolo is definatelly the darkest song on the album. Cudi creates this character "solo dolo" which represents himself and his insecurities. Now the rest is just opinion. my 2 cents on what solo dolo is all about Immediatelly met with an eerie hook kid cudi starts by developing a character mr. Solo dolo (represents cudi himself and insecurities) giving him qualities of a loner. "listen good I don't have nobody" "but what I might feel are the sounds of sanity" this line is saying all he has is his music "sounds of sanity" and he is not even sure what he hears is sane (insecurity that he is just crazy and others will not understand him) "hoping what I hear loops itself continuosuly" "than I won't be afraid--no no" explaining that even though he is different he hopes to stay true to himself. For the unique sound he creates to continue because if he is just being himself than why should he fear what others think. "why must it feel so wrong when I try and do right" "soaring through paradise when I'm closing my eyes" "I'm mr solo dolo" why must it feel so wrong or uncomfortable to do right which is being true to himself. Obviously soaring with closed eyes refers to being high but not the essence of the song rather a facet of who cudi is he gets high, among other things, for inspiration. The name solo dolo means the lonely stoner. Another example of cudis fear of being alone. A fear brought out by the death of his dad. The next verse cudi is speaking to the audience asking for an honest response to his music and feelings "Look at me you tell me just what you see" "am I someone whom you may love or enemy" "am I speaking for you and yours or Someone else" "I need some answers yeah yeah" cudi looking for acceptance in his audience although he soon learns (in the last verse) that acceptnce of self is more important than acceptance of others. |
