Ray LaMontagne – Lesson Learned Lyrics 15 years ago
Rated 0 Okay, I have read through all of the comments and my heart is completely torn. I agree with many of them. I think it can be interpreted many ways. God knows which way Ray experienced it.

But I have a sincere question. It is about the final verse:

Was it you who told me once
Now looking back it seems so real
That all our mistakes are merely grist for the mill
So why is it now after I had my fill
That you steal from me the sorrow that I've earned
Shall we call this a lesson learned?
Shall we call this a lesson learned?

*First off, this site states that he sings "it seems so real" I have also heard people say that he sings "it seems surreal" To very different concepts*

Anyway, do you think that he could be saying "Look, you know that it is important to see the lesson in each mistake we make, why wont you now let me learn mine and you learn yours?" I think he is almost asking her to let him dwell in his pity party. He has done something uncharacteristic, he wants to suffer a bit, but NOT WITH her.

She wants to learn the lesson together, he wants to learn it alone. Is that right?

It seems both have been very foolish. She held on to a heart that had previously loved her but had let her go (it had to, she was pushing and pulling at the same time). She was a self-fulfilling prophecy. And he, he knew he was not handling it in the best way. But he did it anyway and now he wants to feel the sorrow from it but he feels enough of it on his own. She does not get to accuse him...he does, but she doesn't.

Looks like they will both be learning their lessons and ending up very much with out each other.
