My opinion... The "royal we" is a term that was used by kings and queens to indicate that they embodied the will of and spoke for all of their subjects. This song is about the dangers to all of us who enter into the Hobbesian contract of giving up freedoms to those who would rule us and speak for us in order to enjoy the safety and security that the governing powers can give us back in return. What happens when there is an attack on the country and the governing powers go too far in an overreaching response? At what point do the people give up too many freedoms in exchange for too much safety and security? At what point are we no longer ruled by ourselves, and ruled only by fear? "Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once." -- William Shakespeare (Julius Caesar) |

"All the pale things under the earth, Will reverse" = death is not forever Man is saying this to his wife to reassure her guessing that this song is about a man watching memories of his life pass before his eyes just before he dies interpretation matches the video, which shows an endless stream of photographs (memories) linking together and flying by |
