The Temper Trap – Science of Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
I took it to mean his making a social commentary on the death of religion and a new age of reason; "science". Science doesn't take us to a place called heaven. It keeps us right here, on earth, when we die we die. And people who still believe in religion their brakes are running out, they are following blindly and not listening to reason, so they will be the ones to watch the murder of their way of life.
So they are to fear science. Because the less we know the more we sit still, meaning nothing will change if we don't learn from science and turn away from ancient texts which don't have relevance in today's moral and practical world.
I also take the words "my baby's stuck on the road, which leads to nowhere" to be a girlfriend who still believes in religion.

Just my interpretation
