The bar's closing, the cows refer to ladies (udders, tits) they are inebriated, high, and from this lofty place find enlightenment. Steely Dan are always mixing drugs and religion. |

I know little about actual buddhism, but likewise, "They just don't care" probably refers to the buddhist answer to suffering, and that is to attain a state of transcendent emotional stability, divine indifference. |
