I think you've missed the meaning of the song, and the album entirely. Wasted Hours do not contribute to a waste life, or at least in Win Butler's opinion. It's what you make of the wasted hours. You could think of yourself as kids in the buses longing to be free, or you could find someone that makes your wasted hours new and your life livable. The singer appears to still be lost, because he realizes in the present day that he's still a kid on the bus longing to be free. So do you conform to society or not? Modern Man makes it sound like he did conform, even if younger ("people behind him") people can't understand. But most importantly, looking back on all that wasted time, Win admits that, if given the change, he'd "only waste it again" (Suburbs Continued). The whole album has to do with longing to be free from childhood, yet once your self aware of what you lost, you want it back. Like someone else said, it's about making the most of wasted time. Stare out the window all summer and really try to enjoy it. Because one day you will miss it, whether you're aware of it at the time or not. |

I think it's about a man fighting dangerous problems, such as alcoholism, addiction, anxiety, depression (which Tweedy as openly admitted to all), and wants to change so much of his life, but doesn't want to change the one he loves. He wants her to know "it's him he doesn't like" and he's got "reservations" to change, but given the atmosphere of the entire song, I almost believe he knows he can't change, even if that means he's going to be "furthur away". Haunting song guys, probably my favorite off of YHF. |
