Pavement – In the Mouth a Desert Lyrics 10 years ago
In this Malkmus is clearly talking - I would say fairly bluntly - about what was happening to Pavement at the time. Malkmus doesn't write songs about girls. Or at least not until Terror Twilight, if at all. Even shady lane isn't a love song. Here, the oil well is Pavement, Malkmus' talent, and well, can you keep it safe, precious forever, in the underground (scene)? The ball of twine, the big labels, are unraveling. Referred to as "the slacker prince of indie rock" by the NY Times, I believe, like many of Malkmus' lyrics, this is self-referential about his music, his life and his band - crowned the king of it - who now had a chance to "make a try" and he's concerned with how much oil is down there. But being up there, it's what he wants. Even if it dries up, he wants the twine to come down. He wants to see them beg like a little dog for more of his diamond words.

Pavement – Carrot Rope Lyrics 15 years ago
Also when I saw pavement perform at the Roxy in Boston when they were on tour for Terror Twilight, in between songs they had a projector projecting "satan" in refridgerator magnet letters in the background during the encore. Someone told me they supposedly sold their souls to get famous, as legend has it. Probably bullshit but worth noting.

Pavement – Carrot Rope Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought this was a joke about Malkmus' satanism, or "secular humanism", more appropriately. Carrot rope, a rope of lures for rabbits, and references of everything being "down down down", the slim door meaning not everyone "gets through", and the wicked keeper, "God" - the oppressor no longer can keep us down. BUT I really like TheKnifeBusiness' interpretation, as well. Don't think it's about pot or child molestation, however. Another reason I think it's about satanism is that's kind of the whole theme of terror twilight, or at least it could be interpreted that way, from Major Leagues, to Billie, to Spit on a stranger. But I'm probably wrong. Great song though!

Pavement – Cherry Area Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe this song is about a young woman, and sung from her perspective. A "cherry area" could be interpreted as a vagina. I also think it goes "It's new and it's current, it's got news, and it's current is hot" - a typical malkmus wordplay. Even the way he's singing it sounds very effeminate. It seems like the boyfriend/lover/stranger has come to her apartment too late, she's too drunk or tired and tries to entertain him with her gross tv and directors cut film, but when he tries to put the moves on she denies him, saying her "cherry area is a little scary to be around right now". He tries anyway, but is denied again, and then the perspective finally switches to his at the end, where he repeats "I need to go".

Awesome song.
