this song is talking about when william married his wife.
the first stanza talks about how the church he was married in looked like and the people in it. he is talking about this because he seems to regret it in some ways. this song also talks about william and hes loves childhood and how they were in love because he says "promise me that you would wear my right" in a way he is saying she promise him that she wouldn't let him down and love him. but 14 years have past and things have changed. the ending talks about how he is left out on his own and asks his in-laws if he can stay with them. he says he will hold on with open hands, meaning he will not let her go even with what has happened

William Fitzsimmons – When I Come Home Lyrics 15 years ago
this song is talking about the man (william) coming home to see an old friend (or lover) that he hasn't seen in a long time, (Open the door roll, out the mat Welcome is welcome, but you'll take it back
When I come home)- these lines are referring to how he is or wants to be greeted when he comes back home. he obviously feels a little worried about coming home, he mentions gasping for air, and being tied by a noose, but the person he is coming home to see makes him feel "secure" so it perhaps may be her parents. the history between the writer and the audience seems to be broken at some point in the past, so his parents or one of his parents may be a good idea for what this songs is talking about
