i will go with leavubrethe's interpretation. makes a lot of sense to me

possibly, it can also be a love story. i think the narrator is a WW2 soldier in Nantes possibly missing his lover back home

The Courteeners – Not Nineteen Forever Lyrics 15 years ago
funny how we all have different views.

For me this song is clearly about a young guy (maybe mid 20's) who is hooking up with an older woman. All he wants is a physical thing with her (sex?), whereas she's more mature and asks him out on more serious dates (here represented by "tea and toast", because she's more keen on a serious relationship.

She thinks he's in "danger of going too far" by pushing things further, and taking too quick steps.

"You're not nineteen forever", she says, "it seems strange but things they change", as in: you'll understand what i mean one day.

Then they go to a concert and, again, he tries to make it sexual/physical by asking her to dance with him. She gets tired of it after he asks four times and just goes home.

The band does "all they can": they play and entertain the crowd. But it's not enough. The guy couldn't "pull" himself together".

And the story is over, and indeed the 19 year old guy is "not big", "definitely not clever"

Final Note: I love it how he says "never mind, you'll probably never look that pretty again" when she disappeats. This is him saying to himself "fuck that man, life goes on and she wasn't THAT HOT", which is how you see girls at 19 when you're out and about.

So yeah, that's what I think of this song.
