| Josh Ritter – Bone Of Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Kathleen Mauvoreen was an Irish folk balad which was extreamly popular during the civil war. Here is a link to the lyrics http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/mavour.htm I agree with what others have said about a rosetta stone of music. In the end Josh gets to add his contribution to musical history. I love the lines "The words that I sang blew off like the leaves in the wind And perched like birds in the branches before landing on the bone again" |

| Josh Ritter – Change of Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I heard Josh in an interview talking about coming to a point where he knows music is what he will be doing for the rest of his life. I heard this song after this and made a connection. I thing the ocean is the music business. What he sees below 'the drifters who've" gone under are those who didn't make it in this business. The stars above direction less and drifting are those who have achieved super stardom but have lives that are empty. He is just trying to stay afloat and the woman in the bed with him is his best chance at staying grounded. I have no idea if this is correct, but it's my best guess. | |

| Louis Collins and Delia are also old folk songs about real murders. I was able to find information about these on Wikipedia. Apparently all three of these murders take place in the African American community. | |
| Josh Ritter – To the Dogs or Whoever Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The song "Empty Heart" has the following verse. As you can see the last line of this verse is same as the title of this song. Maybe there is some connection. i'm inside with my friends we build fires and pretend that the night could just bend on forever while outside in the frost are the wolves and the lost and we sing to the dogs or whoever Casey Jones (from Wikipedia) John Luther "Casey" Jones (March 14, 1863 — April 30, 1900) was an American railroad engineer from Jackson, Tennessee, who worked for the Illinois Central Railroad (IC). On April 30, 1900, he alone was killed when his passenger train collided with a stalled freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi, on a foggy and rainy night. His dramatic death trying to stop his train and save lives made him a folk hero who became immortalized in a popular ballad sung by his friend Wallace Saunders, an African American engine wiper for the IC. Due to the enduring popularity of this song, his life and legend have been celebrated for over a century |

| I don't know what the tittle is about, but he says the line "singing to the dogs or whoever" in the song Empty Hearts. Maybe there is a connection | |
| Josh Ritter – Southern Pacifica Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think Souther Pacific is the rail road. It was bought out by Unnion Pacific whose colors are red, white, and blue. Roxy Ann is a mountian in Oragan which the Southern Pacific railroad ran past. The subject of the song is on the rail road, maybe a worker. Roxy Ann is his home. | |

| The Shins – Split Needles Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think this song is about getting older and people expecting you to take a stand and form oppions about religion, politics, ect... "You're old enough boy -- too many summers you've enjoyed So spin the wheels, set you up with some odd convictions." They want him to take a side, but he can't commit to any one belief because he can see things from both sides. (polymorphinc oppionion). He is not getting much guidance from those who want him to decide, because he doesn't have faith in their oppionions. Being pushed on the handle bars of a blind mans bike is an extreame version of the blind leading the blind. Spilt neeedles could be comparing finding the truth to finding a neadle in a haystack, but in this instance there are muliple needles because there are mulitple issues. "And this is get what you get for pulling pins, another hole inside the hole you're in" Pulling pins are the pins in hand grenades. |

| The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| A Paste Magainze article with the Shins states the songs in about two lesbians in a small town. My interpretation based in that bit of information is that these two girls (the phantom and the fly) do not fit in with the popular girls. These girls seam to be something beyound their reach. I believe there are six popular girls "file past five and one" The popular girls make fun of them. Although they try to act like they don't care about the town and the people in it they really do and they are hurt by the way they are excluded. A phantom limb is a term used when someone has a limb amputated, but they continue to feel as if it is there. Although the girls have seperated themselves from the town they contine to feel this conection. | |
| Josh Ritter – Wolves Lyrics | 15 years ago |

This is the first Josh Ritter song I heard and it blow me away. I think it's a young couple who fall in love, but don't really know what they are doing. Their were not prepared for the difficulties that arise in relationships and as a result their relationship did not survive. He continues to love her and miss her. Dancing to a song that I'd heard = means modeling the relationship after other couples Singing without knowing the word = means not really knowing how to be in a relationship. They are learning as they go. face was simple and your hands were naked = means she was easy to read and without defenses, as opposed to latter in a relationship when it can get more difficult to understand each other and there is a risk of being hurt by her. The wolves are all the negative things that can affect a relationship money, bill, jobs, ect... Winter is the hard time. Skin and bones of love don't make a meal. We've all heard "you can't live on love alone. The last verse is his regreat the relationship did not survive |

| Josh Ritter – The Curse Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
At first I thought the woman was declining as a result of natual ageing and the mummy is cursed because he has to lose her. Later I started thinking she was declining prematurly because he was gaining strength from her. As he gets stronger she gets weeker. I like the first interpretation better. It's clear he really loves her. |

| Josh Ritter – Kathleen Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think keolen2007 has done the best job of explaining this song. I think the lines "You act like you're hip to their tricks and you're strong, But a virgin Wurlitzer heart never once had a song," is his way of saying she is a young girl who tries to act like she knows all about love, but she doesn't. Like many youg girls she is enjoys flirting, and thinks she is able to resist the advances of her admirers. "Act like you hip to their tricks and your strong" A wurlitzer is a beautiful machnine, but this one has yet to be filled with music. Kathleen is at the age where she looks like a woman, but has yet to experiance love. Josh says "Virgin wurlitzer heart" Using the word heart tells me he is saying she is a virgin to love, and not just using the word virgin in the sexual sence. "I know you are waiting and I know that it is not for me, But I'm here and I'm ready and I saved you the passenger seat. I won't be your last dance, just your last good night. Every heart is a package tangled up in knots someone else tied Josh knows he is not the one she is saving herself for. "I wont be your last dance, just your last good night" Means he wont be the one she wants to spend her life with, be he will be the one who is with her tonight. "Every heart is a package tangled up in knots someone else tied" Means everyone is influenced by many differnt loves and admirers, and Josh just wants to have an impact on her. I think driveing her home should be taken liteally. I don't think they had sex, but they did have a special connection that can not be taken away and that is want the nariator wanted. |
