Just my interpretation - I feel he sings about a woman he loved but had to leave, and he feels remorse about this. He had to leave her because his of his inevitable lifestyle in the Stone Roses. He didn't, however, leave her for his own sake, or for the band's sake, but for her's as she would be unhappy being in that kind of relationship. He feels remorse because "You won't miss your water till your well runs dry" "When the bombs began to fall" = 'When we were breaking up'. "I didn't do it for the roses" = he tells her he did it for her and not for his love for the band. The line "I did it for you, I didn't do it for the glory" fortifies this interpretation. Just my 2 cents |

For me this song is an expression that good music like Andy Bell's doesn't get appreciated. "Thought that I died today Walked off the stage Faded away up through the clouds To 'the gig in the sky' And when I arrived, the angels were singing the song" , a gig in heaven = sublime music and only angels would recognize good music like it's a dream, and the last part "yeah you know the one, are you singing along?" is also a test of the listener if they're singing along to good music or not "I'm the last of a dying breed And it's not the end of the world, oh no It's not even the end of the day". he's the last of good songwriters / people that recognize good music, but still as it's just music, it's not the end of the world, which he also says with "Still life remains" and the song has a positive vibe to it with "somewhere in my heart the beat goes on" that at least he recognizes the good music. the song is somewhat sentimental in its melody too as if to imply that good music mostly is of the past. Dunno that's my take anyway, might be about something entirely different. |

after reading some of these comments i've gotten a new viewpoint on the meaning of this song. i always interpretted "he said to lose my life or lose my love that's the nightmare I've been running from so let me hold you in my arms a while I was always careless as a child", as it was sort of a forbidden love and that the singer's love's man (=he) threatens to kill or hurt him if he pursues his woman, although the woman is also in love with the singer. and that the singer is careless so he'll still pursue the woman. but honestly you guys are probably right in that the song is about the sad fact that you either die first or see your love die - but that the best thing would be to "die at the same time" although that outcome is higly unlikely. as nutty said, the paragraph "and there's a part of me that still believes my soul will soar above the trees but a desperate fear flows through my blood that our dead love's buried beneath the mud" quite obviously refers to that he wants to believe that he and his love's souls will reunite after death, but that it won't be possible as he fears there's no afterlife. that paragraph is beautiful. |

| my favourite song of all time. it's about a relationship gone wrong and even though he'd somewhere like to hate the girl, he won't because he's too good for it. | |

| That's how I interpreted it as well, but I might be a bit biased because it's how I felt treated by my ex, which is why it didn't work out... and that's also one of the reasons I like this song | |
