Bon Iver – Holocene Lyrics 14 years ago
It could be a comment on our insignificance. We aren't the needle or the thread, so we aren't what causes real change and we don't control it either.

The "lost decree" could be "saying nothing, that's enough for me", so we might have once been content with saying nothing and just experiencing things, but now we are obsessed with imposing ourselves on life, to make it feel like we are significant and important.

But, eh, I'm not sure, really.

The Strokes – Metabolism Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if it's really meant to be depressing. Maybe it's not about being obsessed with the concept of death in a kind of dark or even suicidal way, but about being obsessed with doing something before you die. He doesn't want to be "plain", he wants to be someone and he thinks that he's running out of time. Then it's not about wanting to die or anything, it's about worrying about the end before you've even got there yet, which, to be honest, is "just like anyone else, I guess".

Rilo Kiley – Capturing Moods Lyrics 15 years ago
I pretty much agree with Fionn on most things. I think it's about someone she knows that is having a hard time sorting out their priorities, perhaps they takes things too seriously and she's waiting for them to realise that the "rent", and things like that, don't really matter.

I think there might be a little bit of tongue-in-cheek in this, that's what I hear, anyway. Not in a negative way, I just think that it might have been done just as a reminder to someone that, despite the fact she definitely loves the person and is going to wait for them, that they are "wasting the best years of [their] lives". I think the whole song is just a gentle way of saying to someone that, although she's going to stick with them and she accepts that they need time, they should try and accept a little happiness.

Band of Horses – Detlef Schrempf Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think Detlef Schrepf a bad name, I kind of like that it's not connected to the song. I had no idea what it would be about when I saw the name and I like that it's like finding a little hidden gem in the middle of the album. It's lovely, sweet and quite simple, which you can't tell just from the name.

To me this sounds like a breakup song more than a love song, sort of about how you handle it when you realise that the "worst is to come". There's going to be the inevitable town gossip and people who "can't look at you any other way" apart from that poor person who got dumped, or as their source for gossip. Then how do you act afterwards? Instead of becoming something you don't want to be, he tells them to become "someone better than you were" and to learn from the heartbreak.

One of the really lovely things about the lyrics for me is the change from "when eyes can't look at you any other way" to "my eyes can't look at you any other way". The distinction kind of makes you wonder how he sees this person, is he the ex-lover or just a friend worried about a friend because he knows that the person isn't really who they are when they're heartbroken. His perception and opinion of them hasn't changed although in some ways the person has.

Anyways, beautiful song. I've been listening to this album on loop since I got it a few days ago.

Florence + the Machine – Blinding Lyrics 15 years ago
I never thought of the dying thing, it definitely makes sense, though. Especially the way she sings the last bit, like she's fading away. Maybe when she says no more "dreaming" of the wrong world she's not trying to convince herself to let go, she's just saying that she won't have to dream anymore, because she'll be with the boy who died when she dies. In that way it's not about letting go at all, it's kind of the opposite really.

I also like the idea of therapy. "Snow White stitching up the circuit board" could be her going through the motions of everyday life. It's never going to be the same as it was before, no matter how much it looks like it's fixed, since you can't just stitch up a circuit board and make it work properly again.

Either way, I don't think by the end of the song she is any closer to letting go of him as she was at the start, which could be saying that we never really let go of the people we love when they die, that they'll always take a little part of our ability to function with them.

Marina and the Diamonds – I Am Not a Robot Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, I just found this quote from Marina:

“[“I Am Not a Robot”] was me singing to myself. It’s me saying, stop being so ridiculous, you can’t let having a fear of failing hold you back and you’re just one person. It’s connected with a lot of people. I knew that would happen when I was writing it. I had a funny feeling.”

So I guess she was singing to herself and the song just happens to talk to pretty much everyone, because we all act a bit robotic when we're scared.

Wild Beasts – Empty Nest Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about someone leaving something behind that seems to be great, maybe a relationship, maybe a child leaving home, I suppose it could be anything.

There's the anxiety about what will happen to that person and "where they will go". Then at the end it's kind of like acceptance; the people left "suffer alone" and they wait for their "call", but ultimately they acknowledge that "these walls don't fall", so the person will always have something to come back to and without them it will survive.

That's what it sounds like to me anyway. This is one of my favourites, I love Tom Flemming's voice.

The Maccabees – Tissue Shoulders Lyrics 15 years ago
I could've sworn it was "I'll find another with the shoestring love hearts on"...

Anyway, I really love this song. I like the way he says "Never cry. But when you cry..." kind of like he's telling the person not to do these things, because it will hurt, but he knows he will anyway.

I think it's basically about friendship, and about having someone to lean on; someone with "the GPS turned on" or "tissue shoulders on". It's about having someone who knows the way and can take some of the burden off you when something bad happens.

Well, it's like that up until the last bit where he says he "doesn't want to lie alone" and that he'll find someone else with "shoestring love hearts on" or a "shoestring love heart thong" depending on how you hear it I guess.

Not really sure how the two parts tie together, unless he's singing to a friend that has been scorned by the same woman he has. I think that might fit with the whole "I've been here before and it's hard when it's her you're crying for" part. It also might explain why he tells the guy to find a "perfect stranger" for comfort not him. Perhaps their relationship it strained because they dated the same woman and now he can't be a friend to him in that way, but he still doesn't want to see the guy upset.

I don't know, I'm probably over thinking it. Ah well, great song though.

Wild Beasts – The Devil's Crayon Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think it's necessarily about homosexuality; he says "that all his children use to draw", so all of us experience passion and wonder if it's right to or not. Just pointing it out.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about a relationship that isn't really going anywhere.

When he says "She can wait for what I can give" its like he's saying that he's sure she will, and she should, wait for him to commit, no matter what. Then he says "she knows what I am but she won't believe me", I kind of think of this as him trying to tell her that he's no good for her, but she doesn't want to accept it.

"Is that all okay? Will I come off the lightest?" - he's asking if she will accept him or move on; will she find someone 'lighter' or just be 'okay' with him? Then "I can't believe it, it's always like this"; she's picked him again, and he can't believe she has.

He then goes on to say they kept the topic "at bay", so they aren't addressing any of their problems, and "it's there on your mouth... but that's not what I heard" could be him knowing she's thinking about moving on or talking, but that's not what she ever says in the end.

"I'm not whole, you waste it all" - he isn't satisfied. Staying in the relationship is a 'waste'.

"You know what I am... you try to look proud but you're not in the slightest" - she tries to love him for what he is, or at least she pretends to, but he knows she doesn't really.

"It's happening now and it's always been like this", I think this could either be just for the whole of this relationship, or maybe for other ones as well. Kind of like there have always been people who stay in relationships because they don't want to not be in a relationship, not because they love the other person. Because they are scared of being alone. I think that's the whole point of the song, staying in a dead end relationship even though you aren't happy.

So, yeah, that's my long winded explanation for this. It's a good song, not my personal favourite but good all the same.

Marina and the Diamonds – I Am Not a Robot Lyrics 15 years ago
It's strange that she says I am not a robot, not you are not a robot. It kind of makes me think she could be talking to herself. Just a thought.

Then again it could be her saying that she and the other person have something in common, neither of them are "robots" so they should be able to talk to each other and work things out.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Way Out Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about being in a relationship where the other person is more into it than you.

She says he's "all over me" and "it fits around me so tight", kind of like she feels he's smothering her. "The face ain't making what the mouth needs" and "lies and love" is saying they don't trust each other, or at least she doesn't trust him.The second verse is all about him wanting more out of the relationship; the new "tease", and her wanting him to "get over" her. She says she's "way out", so she's not ready to be tied down like that, and that even if he "meant it on the inside" he still couldn't get to her.

I think this has all mostly been said to be honest. Great song though, one of the best on the album.

Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a fantastic song, from an amazing album.

Personally my favourite but is:

"We used to wait for it
Now we're screaming
Sing the chorus again"

Its pretty clever. Nowadays songs are really repetitive, usually with a chorus as a hook to get a point across. It works, but you don't have to think about it very much. IMO he's commenting on how people always wanting the easiest way to get something.

Marina and the Diamonds – Obsessions Lyrics 15 years ago
To me it doesn't sound like she's literally talking about OCD... I think she's talking about the way people over think and obsess over little things and it kind of consumes you.

Like when she was buying crackers, she was obsessing over what people would think ("people are staring") and trying to make a decision even though they were all kind of the same. In the end she just gives up. It could also allude to anorexia, as someone mentioned before.

Then when she's talking about her relationship with the guy, she says "you never told me what it was that made you strong...", she's kind of obsessing about him and wants to know all about him even though he can be a "creep" and it's not really a great relationship.

In the end she doesn't want to be like that, she wants to "erase every nasty thought that bugs me every day of every week" talking about her obsessions.

Anyway, its a fantastic song, probably one of my favourites.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Dust On The Ground Lyrics 15 years ago
"It's that ancient love, that you won't outgrow" > someone you fall in love with, but never really get over

"I await your call, I await your crown
Let's change our roads, and chase them all around" > maybe he's waiting for her to come back?

"And all is silent, all is silent now
Now I don't hide it, I don't hide it now" > even though things are over, he's admits he still has feelings for that person

"There's an itch so slight, even when you're gone" > the "itch" is missing the person

"Well I met you right, but I kept you wrong" > it started off well, but he let her go

"And I must wait until I've found the ground that you are walking on" > and now he wants to find her again.

Anyway, there's my interpretation, I'm not so sure about it, but then I never really am with Bombay Bicycle Club lyrics. I like this song, but by far the best bit is the lead guitar riff for me.

Marina and the Diamonds – Starlight Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok, for the most part I don't have a clue what she's going on about during the verses...

but as for the chorus, "stars in love burn bright, till they're ready to die" I think refers to people who are in love and broadcast it to everyone, they're burning bright so everyone can see it, and they keep doing this until they're "ready to die". I think it's kind of saying that even though some relationships seem really perfect, they can die like everyone else's.

She goes on to say that the "broken spend their lives, staring at the sky", maybe thats talking about hurt people who spend their lives longing for these star-like relationships.

Anyway, its a bit of a confusing song, and for the most part I can't really work out who she's talking to or how she fits into it, but its pretty good.

Florence + the Machine – Blinding Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, it's a lot more sombre and dark than most of her album but I think it's one of the more powerful songs.

To me it sounds like someone dealing with the death of someone really important to them, (the "body in the garden") and struggling to wake up afterwards.

When she says "no more dreaming of the dead as if death was undone" it's like her trying to tell herself to stop dreaming of him as if she could wake him up. She's in "love with the wrong world" because she's in love with the world where he is still alive and she's trying to get herself to let him go.

Snow white was the one that was put to sleep and people assumed she was dead, right? So she could be comparing herself to snow white and her brain to a circuitboard, sort of like she's stitching up her own story in her head so she won't have to face the fact that the guy is gone. Not sure about this one, this is just an idea. I also like the explanation that "snow white" actually means cocaine, and it's drugs that are messing with her brain as she tries to forget him, although that's a little darker.

"Synapse slipping through the hidden door" could be saying that she is unable to function properly now, and because the door is "hidden" she won't be able to find the ability to again.

There are really hundreds of interpretations that you could make. It's definitely one of her best songs.

Bombay Bicycle Club – What If? Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not sure about this but to me it sounds like there are three people in this song; the singer, "her" - the girl that he wants to ask out or something, and a third person - his competetion.

In the first few lines:

I could go and ask her first,
You could try but it won't work,

Its like they both want to ask her, but then he gos on to say that neither of them have the guts to do it and he's wondering how the night would have turned out if they had.

Thats just what it sounds like to me, but Bombay Bicycle Club's lyrics are always a little abstract and I never feel like I understand 100% of what he's saying.

Noah and the Whale – My Broken Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this album. The songs (especially this one) are all heartbreakingly beautiful.

This one is pretty easy, I think it's about a guy who saw love pass him by and didn't grab it. Now he's so badly heartbroken that he doesn't think it could get any worse.

As with most Noah and the Whale lyrics, it's simple but really well put. The violin part is really fantastic too.
