| At the end of the song at first you think that the singer is speaking directly to you as you listen to the song. The strange dust landing on your hands and face. But the dust is the singer's aged memory of the lover he misses. Trudging back over pebbles and sand he is in the midst of remembering the touch of his lover's hand, and "your face," his lover's unforgettable image. | |

This beautiful song has many overtones and it might be Morrissey's best. It's about experiencing your present life in a special place (like the seaside town) but remembering the past that happened there and wanting to go back to it but knowing that it's impossible to do so. The place is still special but it's bittersweet now. The line about clothes being stolen is your reminition of an exciting time or event in your life...a rush. Your clothes get stolen when you're skinny dipping! And so the memory is strongly tied to the place, and the people or person you were with....and the happiness and thrill that was experienced. I think it is about the memory of a past love. For me this song represents the realities of life. Everything good comes to an end, you have to take the good with the bad, and so on... Though those statements have been made cliche everyone knows how true they are in their own lives. The singer longs to just erase the past with a "nuclear bomb" but it won't come. He can't just forget that this special relationship happened and came to a sad ending. Sunday is the first day of the week, but he can't seem to move forward. He lives everyday like Sunday because he can't escape this feeling and though he could leave the place and never come back, something is keeping him there.... Yet there is hopefulness in that his vacation in the sea side town will end and he will go back to his real home and normal life where these feelings won't be so present in his mind. So strong and the song brings out so many emotions ...excitement, happiness, uncertainty, and melancholy... |
