I have always thought of the "man in the in window" as God always watching him. There are many undertones of regret and guilt throughout the rest of the album. Obviously Sufjan uses many religious references themes and undertones in the rest of his repertoire so the presence and manifestation of God and religion in his music is not a foreign concept. I believe the idea of God being the judge of our souls and him always watching can cause unrest. TO me the phrase
"it wasn't safe to breathe at all"
depicts this unrest and anger that there's no getting away from him watching through the window. |

Oh my. I love her voice too. And made the exact same connection to Kate Bush. I swear. Their styles are so different but Joanna and Kate come from the same world. They are just a breath of fresh air to the music world |

pursuitoflife i made an account just to say thank you for understanding the song. i do believe vernon uses specific diction in his lyrics for their connotations. those personal loose connotations are then, i believe, meant to be woven together for a broader meaning. motherhood, love, distance, longing, heartache, scars; all of these ideas are meant to be seen together but do not all lead to a label of ONE meaning. generally i would say this song is about love and heartache (obviously) and i believe trying to get anymore specific than that only takes away from other meanings. there are too many ideas and images woven together in this song (yes it is abstract) to be taken one way. vernon writes this song in this general (seemingly random) manner because thats how love is. everyone has different experiences and emotions that lead to different interpretations. so i say there is no specific meaning, but this song also most certainly does not lack a meaning! |
