| My personal interpretation of this song is that it was written about the uncertainties of being in a relationship, hence the line "What if you get off at the next stop? Would you just wave as I'm drifting off?" The girl in the song is having doubts about where things are going. Sometimes you'll hear people say that they're "scared" to be in a relationship because they don't want to get "too attached" to someone (often times because they know that their partner can leave at any given moment) and that's really part of what makes it difficult for people to have relationships to begin with. They get scared and they run. Just like the girl in the song. They run because they don't want to get hurt, and if staying in the relationship means running the risk of abandonment, then some people don't feel like they have much of a choice. Really what it all comes down to though, is that having a relationship is really just a leap of faith. We never really have any way of knowing how things will turn out, we just have to trust and believe, and hope things turn out for the best... Also, the line "Yes I have to have to have to change the rules, I can't lose" kind of reminds me of the lyrics from another song that says "And you can't leave me if I'm already gone." Like I said, what really causes people to run from their relationships is the fear of being abandoned (as well as the fear of the unknown) and the fact that's absolutely impossible for us to control every aspect of our lives, especially another person... | |
