I don't, and I haven't always understood some of the lyrics to Steely Dan's songs. However, I do know how they make me feel. For this song, I feel sadness. The refrain, "Soon you'll throw down your disguise, we'll see behind those bright eyes...
It gets me every time. |

"The kid will live and learn as he watches his bridges burn."
That line alone has stood out for me in this song for decades. I don't have a lot to say, others have done so most eloquently. But having to learn as one watches his bridges burn. . . Deep, poignant, frightening. , ,
BRILLIANT |

You are right partially, the beat is the same as "Baby I'ma Star", but there is a certain intensity that "America" has that "Baby I'ma Star" does not have. I know I don't sound clear but listen to them back to back and you will know what I mean. |

This song tells of a young woman who had it going on so to speak, but her quest to get high turned into a quaqmire she never could excape from. This young lady had talent and could have made it big, but the song states she was not very nice. At the end of the song we find out that the lady this song speaks of died..."passed away". The melody is haunting and this is a song that stays with you long after you hear it. It is also a song that makes me sad everytime I hear it... Sad for the lady in question, and all people who cannot excape the clutch of drugs. |

I always thought she was an alcoholic/druggie and he is just tired of her drunken ways and running around so he is telling her to move on so he can. |

I always thought it meant a girl who was a lot of fun had returned home after being gone for whatever reason.
All the guys who were her friends and probaly had crushes on her are glad she is back, and they are anticipating all the fun they are going to have when the their town sweetheart returns home. Compared with all these other interpretations, mine seems so naive. |

I love your interpretation it makes too much sense. I have been so in love with the music of this song for the past ten years, I am just getting around to figuring out what the song means...I can just listen to it over, and over ,and over again and never get tired of it. I am locked in the melody's embrace. |
