After listening to the lyrics the song sort of reminds me of "Round Here" by Counting Crows. Both lyrics have parallels like eccentric female characters and somewhat stolid narrators. They both also use the word "crumbling" and the girl is naked at some point. Based on what I understand of that song, I think this song has a similar meaning. I think the girl is the band. Mars is that mysterious weird place that is stardom. The band hopes their window to make it hasn't closed, leaving them to just watch the stars, or the more acclaimed, successful ones. I think the narrator is music, or the music business- something along those lines. The band members could be at jobs, getting educations, or at least getting sleep. They do none of that. Music "broke them." They love playing so much. Money, education and sleep are needs of people, but the music or maybe the music business, the club managers, etc. just want them to keep playing, making good music, to keep filling seats. The daisies represent a mutual love for each other but the music game is so hard to stay committed to. I think the sitting naked and looking dead is how the band feels so fragile, so open and exposed (naked) and like they gave their all to the business and are flat gassed (dead). Seven nines and tens is harder to work out, but it is a pretty, obscure line. I think that may represent times they got booked at various clubs. Here at 9o'clock there at 10. So many gigs, no wonder they are so tired and frustrated! That's why the paper is crumbled. And that's it. Feels anachronistic and silly to comment so deeply on a song so old and not mainstream, but the message is so alive. Ultimately we never know for certain the fate of the girl in the song, but the band itself has been pretty on again off again. iTunes even compares them to Smashing Pumpkins which is awesome, but which band went on to become a household name in the Alternative-rock world? Well, we hum "Cherub Rock." |

| To all the people that are saying that the words in the song arent good things to say to a suicidal person, remember this. Bono never did get to speak with hutchence. This whole "discussion" he is having is fake. At the point Bono wrote it. The song was very likely a coping tool for himself. He felt just a little selfish that his friend was gone. People do not always consider they live their lives for others too and sometimes that thought in itself is overwhelming. | |

| The lyrics never say anything about, "a light at the end of the tunnel" just strictly depression. | |
