This is what I get from the song. SUCH a great song. A lot of symbolism is used in all of her songs. Seems that I have been held, in some dreaming state A tourist in the waking world, never quite awake No kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber or 'asleep'. Until I realize that it was you who held me under ---she’s in a dream or world that is not quite her own. No small thing could wake her from this dream. It would have to be a shock. The shock is that she suddenly realizes that it was ‘you’ that kept her in this dream. She’s not been able to see the truth because of you. Felt it in my fist, in my feet, in the hollows of my eyelids Shaking through my skull, through my spine and down through my ribs ----- Once she acknowledges the truth, she knows it's irrefutable. She’s subconsciously known it all along. She feels it quaking in her innermost parts. She's probably been denying it, so it makes the tidal wave of emotion that much stronger. No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world --- When ‘death itself was undone’ is probably referring to the fact that she thought what they had was perfect. It was so great it was like death itself was coming undone. But she can’t dream about that anymore because their love is dead. Calling like a crow line reminds me of The Secret Garden… as in she’s knows it’s a fairytale now… there’s no point in calling out for someone that won’t be there. There won’t be any dreaming like there used to be. She was in love with her dream which wasn’t real. She thought it was, but she’s waking up and see’s that it was the wrong world. And I could hear the thunder and see the lightning crack All around the world was waking, I never could go back Cos all the walls of dreaming, they were torn right open And finally it seemed that the spell was broken ----the world of her dream is shattering. The very foundations of her dream have been broken down. And all my bones began to shake, my eyes flew open And all my bones began to shake, my eyes flew open ----right as the dream completely shatters, she finally wakes up. Snow White's stitching up the circuit boards Synapse slipping through the hidden door Snow White's stitching up the circuit board --- Snow White is associated with sleeping in this case. But Snow White is awake now, and she’s ‘fixing’ or ‘stitching up’ what happened to her brain (the circuit board) while she was sleeping. A synapse is a junction that permits a neuron to pass an electric chemical or signal to another cell. So a synapse slipping through the hidden door could mean a subconscious signal has gone off in her brain. The pieces are finally coming together for her. |

While you lie on your back And milk through the scars So careful you are To surrender a thing But Jesus ain't comin' So don't waste your time Not yours and not mine You're only dreaming And while you were scheming The silver the sheets Far above the leaves I snuck into your seat Don't lie there, lurking Behind your troubled walls Wicked as they are You're not deceiving And if I could find your heart I would pull it from your chest And smash it with my fist Til it was beating And if there's a hole inside Heaven in your prayer Coz the angel that you kissed Just left you bleeding I know it ain't easy To keep ramblin' on When the voices in your skull Are always screaming Broke into your prison And dround the sleeping guards Painted flowers on the bars And snuck you out the yard Paralysed and gleaming With visions of new states We're wrapped in our embrace While we were dreaming |

It's almost like someone she loves is dying. 'I could feel myself growing colder. I could feel myself under your fate.' As that person is dying, she feels herself fading because she is tied under their fate like it was her own. and when she says, 'It was you breathless and tall. I could feel my eyes turning into dust, two strangers turning into dust.' It's like she is seeing the person rise up in her mind, but she's watching with eyes that don't even seem to be her own (2 strangers). They're turning into dust because she is watching the one she loves turn to dust. |

I love this song. It's just... so perfect and I can't even explain why. For some reason, I've always thought of Edward and Jacob when I hear it. The first verse, Edward could easily be talking to Jacob. The second verse sounds very much like something Jacob would say to Edward. The chorus seems like they are swapping off... both taking little stabs at each other. The final verse with the whole 'eyes on fire' thing... I think it's kind of in Jacob's head... his thoughts. He's trying to get this strategy going, but every time he has a plan, Edward emerges in all of his grace to fell it. Even though he doesn't want to be, subconsciously he's kind of in awe of Edward. |

I think that she’s mainly saying that some people will truly just sit around and wait until they’re dead because they don’t know what to do… they’re tired and lost. But she knows what she wants out of life, and she’s going to live it out. And in this verse: Beaten, battered, and cold my children will live just to grow old but if I sit here and weep I’ll be blown over by the slightest of breeze I think she’s saying that her children will be the same as those other people… just living to grow old, but if she just sits there and cries about it, she won’t be able to live herself. LOVE this song. I think there are a lot of different angles to it. |
