Josh Ritter – Change of Time Lyrics 14 years ago
An article with the Express (a Washington Post free daily) had a brief thought from Josh about each song on the So Runs the World Away Album. His comment on this one was:

"It's one of the touchstones of the record in terms of sound. I felt like I wanted it to be an epic about waking up and seeing the person you're lying next to."

From the lyrics it seems that if his dreams are taking him worlds away, sometimes dangerous place, and he wakes and sees the person he's lying next to, then continues sleeping away and dreaming with the body becoming the next dream.

Josh Ritter – Long Shadows Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm curious if anyone has thoughts on who 'him' is in this line. It sounds like someone reaching out for someone for comfort and not finding them.

"I'm not afraid of the dark, so if the stars get scarce and you reach for him --
and, Honey, he's not there -- you can reach for me"

I first thought it was reference to reaching out to your spouse/partner/significant other, and suggesting you'll find comfort with me instead of who you are with. But that doesn't seem like Josh.

Then I wondered if it had to do with faith. If you reach for him in times of darkness, with him being god or any religion? Reach for me instead when you find that god's not there.
