Bad Religion – Marked Lyrics 12 years ago
It is about how every action that we take or any event which occurs changes us as individuals. Every time you take an action you are a slightly more developed, different version of the previous you, and this happens continuously. I am not the same person who began typing this message.

Bad Religion – Epiphany Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is just about the moment when you realize that nothing about our existence makes any sense, and all the devices you used to anchor yourself and make you feel okay about your situation are also equally lacking in meaning. As a child, we all just accept our environment and relish in it, enjoying existence unquestioningly, but as we grow up and begin to mature we get to the point where we can see the truth about ourselves (that we are ephemeral organisms which don't have the capacity to learn anything about our origins." "We arrive at this place of no return" - innocence is lost, you can never return once this realization has set in. We realize that we have been deceived by our own minds that we have control and understanding, when in reality there is none. Talking about how everything is relative is acknowledging that all that we know is based off of observations which are based off of observations of other things. Everything is comparable to something else, and everything exists in relativity to other things. It's really all about how YOU look at it. "subservient in total to one's perspective"

Bad Religion – In So Many Ways Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is very philosophic. The first line refers to Socrates "Allegory of the Cave" (written down by Plato.) "I can see the shadows on the wall" refers to the people in the metaphor who have been chained and facing a wall their entire lives, their only glimpse of other things the shadows on the wall of other peoples movements. Therefore Greg puts himself in the position of one of these people, which indicates his philosophic belief that we know very little about the true reality of our situation. He then goes on the say "No one really knows why we die" which is one of the basic premises of the song. In consequence of our complete lack of true understandings, we ignore our ignorance and worship mediocrity and create fantasatic stories to explain our origin. We ignore the fact that our very existence makes us sacred, and that we have great skill (virtuosity.) In so many ways we live to follow the sun, we are ephemeral beings who are compelled to action by external stimuli and who do not reach our true potential.

Bad Religion – Inner Logic Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe that this song is about the small group of opulent people that control most of what happens to us. Lobbyists, bankers, oil executives, these people have far greater power and I think this song refers to the possibility that they form a sort of oligarchy or an "inner logic" similar to the term "inner party" in the book 1984.

If I pierce the complexity I won't find salvation
Just the bald and overt truth of the evil and deception
There is an inner logic"

The complexity is the events that take place behind closed doors among the world most powerful individuals that potentially affect laws and human treatment, and the term inner logic refers to the knowledge possessed by these inner circles of society. The words "content and free of care, they rejoice in morning ritual" refers to the fact that these super-rich oligarchs still engage and require basic human desires such as breakfast with the family etc. and yet they somehow justify manipulating the world to their bidding.

"Decorated warriors drill harmless kids on pavement
Simulating tyranny under red alert
Protecting the opulent and staging moral standard
They expect redemption of character and self-growth"

This refers to the iron-grip the military holds on its employees. They recruit children in highschool and other people to fight needless wars to perpetuate our perpetual war economy, protecting the opulent.

"Graduated mentors stroll in marbled brick porticos
In sagacious dialog they despise their average ways
Displaying pomp and discipline, they mold their institution
Where they practice exclusion on the masses every day"

This I believe is about people who spend their whole lives dedicated to scholarly pursuits, speaking in sagacious dialog and despising the fact that they aren't in on the closed-door proceedings even though they are mentally astute enough to deserve access. They become snobby, "displaying pomp" and create their own inner circles where they attempt to practice their own exclusion.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone agrees\disagrees with me.

Bad Religion – Grains of Wrath Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about the relentless march of agriculture across our nation. The reference at the beginning of the song I believe reflects an older person reflecting on the changes that took place agriculturally in his lifetime, spanning from organic farming necessarily to the green revolution of the 70s. Now, we live in a world polluted by genetically modified crops and monoculture which is both bad for the environment, and human health. The primary crops in the United States, corn (maize) and soybeans are both principally genetically modified and are practically useless for human necessities. The only thing they are good for is a cheap way to fatten up animals before we slaughter them, and they are only grown because they are highly subsidized. Another fact about these "grains of wrath" is that the great plains are now mainly corn and soybeans and much habitat has been replaced with these useless grains. How often do you see a farmer growing broccoli or other vegetables like watermelon or carrots? Not often compared to corn and soybeans. Profit and greed dominates in the modern world, as this song exemplifies.
