The Dead Weather – 60 Feet Tall Lyrics 15 years ago
I always got the impression this one was a lot more about lust than any deeper relationship. I mean, the only good traits she describes about whomever she's speaking is that they're apparently a good lay. Otherwise they're a pretty miserable excuse for a person, but she's able to tolerate it because they're good in bed. Similar themes to other songs on the album, sure, but this track always sounded much more impersonal.

The Dead Weather – So Far from Your Weapon Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds like it's about retribution to me. The first line is the big giveaway; I can't think of a better metaphor for a grudge than that. Then the song slowly alludes to what passed between the narrator and whomever she's addressing, and explores what a desire for vengeance will drive someone to. I mean, with my meaning in mind, I can't help but feel sorry for who she's talking to. The lines "You wanna get up? Let go? I say 'no'," imply that she's already in a position of complete dominance, and her target is completely at her mercy. She doesn't sound too merciful in this track.

The Dead Weather – Hang You from the Heavens Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is about relationships that are bad for both people, but neither can really break away from. Throughout the entire song Allison Mosshart sounds very conflicted, and the phrase "One step forward, and back two/three" is pretty indicative of that. She makes a conscious effort to end the relationship, does all she can to sabotage it, but at the end of the day she still has passion in her heart ("I'd like to grab you by the hair"), and still can't help but revere her partner ("and hang you up from the heavens"). Then the alternate phrase ("and drag you to the devil") conflicts further, showing that she also feels her partner is, basically, an asshole.

I could go into more detail, but I think you can follow along my train of thought with this in mind.

The Dead Weather – 3 Birds Lyrics 15 years ago
That's just, like, your opinion man.

This band is just as good at instrumentals as they are vocals. If you can't appreciate a track without lyrics, then that's pretty sad.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Stupid MF Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song was made entirely for creative people to listen to so they could vent their aggression toward people who don't understand what they create.

Well, it was probably made for MSI to vent, but I think any artist in any field, professional or amateur, has this song playing in their head at some point in their lives.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Last Gay Song Lyrics 15 years ago
Pretty sure this was a fun little bit of self-awareness for the band, because they use homosexuality as a metaphor quite a bit. I'm sure they've heard before that the overuse it, but they couldn't care less.

The intro was fucking great too. I wish I could see what Jimmy was actually wearing, because I just know it was completely over-the-top.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Bring The Pain (Method Man cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I too hate all the bands that ever cover bands I enjoy.

Fuck it, I already know subtlety will go over your head. You're fucking retarded to hate on a band because they're paying tribute to another. It's not like this was a single, they just liked the song and wanted to cover it.

You may want to reassess your priorities if you take a song about murdering people en masse so seriously.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Backmask (With Backwards Text) Lyrics 15 years ago
Can't say I agree. This seems to me to be one of their more straight forward songs. The hidden meaning is in the backmasked phrases themselves. The lyrics themselves are mostly intended to be satirical of the perceptions of backmasked messages in music, and more than a little inflammatory. The backmasked phrases included in the song, though, are the real punchline. Especially if and when some mother hears their kid listening to the track and tries to stir up a bunch of controversy.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Shut Me Up Lyrics 15 years ago
Good lord, is there ANY Mindless Self Indulgence song that someone will not attribute to sex?

Personally, I always thought the song was a statement to people who didn't like their shit and told them they're a bunch of faggots (Like in "F" from their preceding album). It's intended to call them out on their threats and ask them to follow through, knowing that they're just insecure pricks in reality.

At least that's the impression I get. Not a lot to this song lyrically, so it's very open to interpretation.

Sounds very interesting. Could a link be possible? Not that I don't believe you, I'd just genuinely like to see the interview.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Prove Me Wrong Lyrics 15 years ago
The song likely has a very specific meaning for Jimmy and his wife, as has been alluded to, but I don't think many artists would go and make music talking specifically about their lives, at least not music they publish. It has a much more general meaning as well: it describes love from an extremely cynical, yet cautiously optimistic point of view. I find it interesting that people think this doesn't sound like their other stuff; while it certainly is unique, I can't think of an MSI song that couldn't be described that way. They don't have a "sound," because they always revise their style and experiment with new ideas. When one looks at the lyrics and tries to disconnect from the personal life of the person who wrote them, they can see that this song embodies the overall theme of "Mindless Self Indulgence" as well as any song they've made to date.

Granted, that's a bit esoteric, and I'm not saying there isn't an undercurrent of Jimmy's real life in the song, but I think the current analysis of the lyrics focuses more on specifics than it does general themes, and we're really missing half the equation when that happens.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Mark David Chapman Lyrics 15 years ago
I think you guys are missing the meaning of the reference to Mark David Chapman. Yes, he killed John Lennon. The reason why, though, is what's important. Chapman drew from the book "Catcher in the Rye" that the "phonies" of the world should be executed. He perceived John Lennon as a phony, and thus murdered him. MSI is not saying that Chapman did a good job by killing Lennon, they're saying that we could use another crusader against phoniness in the music industry today.

As for the Hitler reference, I can hardly believe there's a debate about it. The stereotypical "emo" look resembles that of Adolph Hitler. It's like no one's ever seen a picture of him. It likely carries a double meaning, also referring to the uniformity of "counter-culture" today. In fact, if anyone actually bothered to watch the video for this, you'd see both of these themes at work in very obvious ways.

Mindless Self Indulgence – You'll Rebel to Anything (As Long as It's Not Challenging) Lyrics 15 years ago
Anyone who's focusing on one group of people with their definition is a complete moron. The song is about the growing trend in contemporary music where artists just put out grating melodrama for teens of all types to eat up. It doesn't matter if it's My Chemical Romance, Korn, or Avril Lavigne. The point Jimmy is trying to make is that it's all insipid bullshit that everyone involved in should be ashamed of. Hell, the name of the band refers to this, and I'm fairly certain there's at least one song on every album they've made that tries to illustrate this point.

And yet half of his fans don't get it. There's a reason why he's a bit passive aggressive towards us.

Green Day – Know Your Enemy Lyrics 15 years ago
Lyrically, this song is pretty boring and annoying, really. However, that's not really the point of the song. The lyrics are pretty much just there to back up the instruments in this track, and to give the notes clear purpose. Complaining about the lyrics on this track is like complaining about the label on a bottle of water.

Green Day – Song of the Century Lyrics 15 years ago
This is probably one of the best intro tracks I've ever heard. It reminds me of various plays (A Midsummer Night's Dream comes to mind as a specific example) where characters greet the audience before the play proper begin.

What really sets it apart is its style, though. The grainy, static background gives it an unnerving atmosphere that is in direct conflict with the soothing melody of the lyrics.

And, of course, the song itself is well-written and especially well-performed. Probably one of my favorite things about Green Day; even if you can't stand their rhetoric and dislike their style, you have to admit that they are technically superb.

Them Crooked Vultures – Mind Eraser, No Chaser Lyrics 15 years ago
This song seems to be about drug abuse as a means of escapism. The idea of amnesia in a pill is the most obvious reference, but it hardly ends there. The most subtle is probably "Dulling the edge of a razor blade," in my mind, refers to the act of cutting up a drug into lines of powder to snort it. I can't really think of another action that one would willingly use a razor blade for that would cause it to significantly dull, outside of its intended use of course.
