| Kate Nash – Do-Wah-Doo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This really summarises my attitude to boys and describes an accurate portrayal of adolescence. When boys realise girls and vice versa, people change. It is a roller-coaster of ups and downs, but quite frankly I would rather just read a book. | |
| Moulin Rouge – El Tango de Roxanne Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I always get shivers and my hair stands on end when I listen to this. I loved Moulin Rouge and still do, and this song is perfect for the scene in the movie. I liked the Police version, but this has such a different mood. The string section and at the crescendo where it drops (to put it in dubstep terms, that's the only way i can really describe it) is absolutely amazing. The version I have from the soondtrack differs slightly from the movie but both versions are brilliant. I would love to learn the dance routine, it would be so cool. It's so intense and painful, really conveys the desperation in McGregor's character and the ill-fated love between his and Kidman's character. I love the "Why does my heart cry" bit and FireVix3n, it does sound so familiar but I haven't found anything. Would love to know. Moulin Rouge is my favourite Lurhmann work. :) |

| Emmy the Great – Dylan Lyrics | 15 years ago |

For me, this is another of Emmy's songs about her brother, and his fictional/real? suicide. "Edward Is Dedward", "Bad Things Coming" and "Absentee". It seems as the younger sister, she's watching her older brother become a distant moody teenager with an enthusiasm for Bob Dylan and going through a difficult teen angst stage, using Bob Dylan as his musical role model. He alienates Emmy by attempting to be cool or because he's dissatisfied with his life. I personally love Bob Dylan and Emmy the Great. I love the first two lines: "I pray for rain because I'm trying/To find God and make him cry" and "Like reading an Italian book from the thirteenth century is not that hard to do" because of the way it sounds and the syncopation. |

I love this song because the lyrics created such vivid imagery. For me it's about a Christmas with the family several years after the death of her brother. I associate this with "Edward Is Dedward" and "Bad Things Coming, We Are Safe". I don't know if it is true, but it appears to me that Emmy's brother committed suicide and those three songs are associated with his death and her grieving process. In this song, she details how her family reacts, and how those little things that belonged to him hurt her the most. It's mingled with older memories from her childhood, which involved him, and like "Bad Things Coming" lines like "Edward come and sit with me/I fell asleep and now I am afraid" and "Read to me again" compared with Absentee lyrics like "I play out in the street" and "Strange pictures" under his bed seem very childlike. The bit about "strange pictures" reminds me of "Short Country Song" and reading the 'newspaper'. :) This is such a poignant song but the musical tone of it makes it seem like a festive occasion like Christmas and very jolly, the simple rhymes and clear lyrics emphasise the child side of the narrator but also make it emotionally powerful. Beautiful. :) |

| Christina Aguilera – Candyman Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I love this song because of the 1940s feel and the cheeky and saucy tone of it. The video is superbly done and pays great homage to the era its meant to invoke. It sounds similar to some Gwen Stefani material because the co-writer Linda Perry writes a lot of popular chart music and co-wrote "What You Waiting For?" from Love.Angel.Music.Baby and was heavily involved in the album's production. She also co-wrote Aguilera's "Beautiful". She co-wrote everything on Back to Basics so you can really see her influence - I think she and Aguilera work brilliantly together when re-creating music from past eras. This song and video made me take up jive. No lie. :) |
