I think everyone's missed on this one so far. The speaker in this song is War itself. War can be "both both friend and enemy, an object of disdain," it's the "pain that brings us close to God," it is the "bandage and the bane," it's the "answer that we misunderstand," it "does the evil that an honest man can't," etc. etc. Plus it's something that we can't control. It accompanies both the hunters (hounds) and the hunted (foxes). Once war has "cut us in," so to speak, there's no way out but to fight. Lines referencing the high ground also conjure up images of battle and conflict. |
