Given the situation of the band as this album was being recorded, this song never fails to make me ball my stupid eyes out. Almost inconsequentially, at this late date, I think the line is "matches as *we* burn away". It's so clearly -- and beautifully -- about the loss of a loved one, and the lessening importance of that loss as life, as it will, progresses -- I'm crying right now. I thought I was over this. Always true, but time, y'know? What can you do, but live and love? I wish I could be more eloquent, but I'm rocking out too much and crying too hard -- which is surely all the tribute needed. |
